CFCF teams up with AACR to award new research grant
researchCFCF is pleased to announce a new grant opportunity made possible by collaboration with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Two $250,000 grants will be awarded to researchers pursuing innovative ideas and approaches that have a direct application and relevance to carcinoid cancer or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.
 
Through this joint effort, CFCF and AACR seek to increase the understanding of neuroendocrine tumor biology and identify new treatment targets for carcinoid and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

Calling all runners: Join Team CFCF in the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon!
Take to the streets of DC for this year's Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on October 31! Registration is now open and Team CFCF is looking for runners to join us in our third year participating in the MCM.
 
As a member of Team CFCF you will  receive your very own sunflower singlet, marathon training guide, online fundraising page, and be invited to attend a pre-event pasta dinner for Team CFCF runners, family members, and local survivors! Not to mention, you will have the gratifying experience of knowing that 100% of every dollar you raise goes directly towards finding a cure!

Featured Memorial: Christian G. O'Connor
July 16, 2010 marked the one year anniversary of Christian G O'Connor's death from carcinoid cancer. Chris was only 40 years old when he lost his battle with carcinoid cancer; he left behind many loved ones including his wife, Kristin Grimes O'Connor, and 4 year old son, Shane.
 
Friends and family members honor Chris' memory by raising funds for carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumor research. His fundraising page declares, "Nothing would make him happier to know that we're helping to find a cure so that other families don't have to suffer through the pain and sadness that ours has had to endure."
North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society seeks abstract submissions for 2010 symposium
The North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS) is seeking research abstract submissions for its upcoming symposium on October 29-30, 2010.
 
"In the interest of encouraging the exchange of new findings, NANETS will accept relevant abstracts that have been previously presented in other venues. Abstracts related to either clinical or basic/translations research in neuroendocrine tumors are invited. The top abstracts in each area will be selected for oral podium presentations during the meetings."

Afinitor doubles progression-free survival time in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor patients
Novartis Pharmaceuticals recently announced promising results from a Phase III clinical trial of Afinitor (everolimus), an approved treatment for advanced renal cell carcinoma. Presented at the 12th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer in Basel, Switzerland, results from the trial showed that when paired with best supportive care, Afinitor extended the amount of time without tumor growth in advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor patients from 4.6 to 11 months.
 
The study, entitled RADIANT-3, is part of the largest clinical trial program in patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors. Click here to read the full press release issued by Novartis.
