CFCF awards grant to Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Genome Project
CFCF is pleased to award a two-year research grant to Nickolas Papadopoulos, Ph.D. and the pancreatic research team at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Papadopoulos' study will identify the genetic changes underlying the development of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.
By identifying the genetic signature of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, Dr. Papadopoulos' study will lead directly to new diagnostic tools and gene-specific therapies. Additionally, the discoveries made in this study will create opportunities for advancement in the field of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research. This study compliments CFCF's concurrent genomic study of carcinoid cancer lead by Dr. Matthew Meyerson at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

CFCF Directors featured on "It's Your Health" radio program
CFCF Board Member, Carrie Host, and Executive Director, Lauren Erb, were featured on the "It's Your Health" radio program on Boston area station 91.5 WUML; the interview aired on May 27. To download and listen to the interview click here (and scroll down to 5/27/2010).

Lauren and Carrie discuss CFCF Founder Nancy Lindholm's recent distinction as a Massachusetts General Hospital one hundred honoree. The interview also touches on Carrie's novel, Between Me and the River, a memoir about her fight with carcinoid cancer as a wife and mother of three young children. Click here to read a recent CURE Magazine review Carrie's memoir; click here to purchase the book through amazon.com. Carrie recently authored a short essay on healing titled The Light Side of Darkness. Both Carrie's memoir and this essay are wonderful sources of support for patients facing the struggles of living with cancer.

Team CFCF profile: PMC cyclist Craig Berkson
The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation would like to extend its appreciation to carcinoid survivor and Team CFCF cyclist, Craig Berkson. Craig, who was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor and underwent surgery over five years ago, is a veteran cyclist on the CFCF Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) team. 2010 will mark Craig's third year in the PMC. So far, he has ridden hundreds of miles and raised over $40,000 to cure carcinoid cancer and related neuroendocrine tumors through his participation in the PMC!

Help Craig reach his 2010 goal of raising $12,000! Click here to donate to Craig's ride. Click here to view a news clip of Craig's inspiring story.

New study confirms Avastin linked to kidney damage
Avastin, a pharmaceutical manufactured by Genentech, has been found to cause kidney damage in some patients. Dr. Shenghong Wu reported in this month's issue of the Journal of American Society of Nephrology that patients on Avastin were at a fourfold risk for protein loss and kidney damage. Moreover, the FDA has stamped Avastin with its highest level of caution due to problems that arose after the drug's approval, including hemorrhaging and interference with the wound healing process. Avastin is currently prescribed to treat a variety of different tumors.

Dr. Wu and other cancer specialists argue that Avastin's benefits outweigh its risks; when used in conjunction with chemotherapies, Avastin is useful in helping patients control their cancer. An effective targeted therapy, the drug is used to thwart the growth of tumor blood vessels that feed cancerous tumors.

Click here to read the ABC News story detailing this issue.

If you have concerns about Avastin or other medication you are receiving, please discuss this with your doctor. For help finding a doctor, please visit the CFCF Doctor Database or contact us at info@caringforcarcinoid.org.
Carcinoid patient's liver transplant strengthens friendship
Seattle-born Vancouver resident Jennifer Weiss was recently featured on the front cover of the VancouverSun for her inspiring story of hope and friendship. A new mother of a six-week-old baby girl, Weiss was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor at the age of 32. Over a two year period, Weiss underwent surgery to remove the tumor, a liver resection, and six months of chemotherapy. Yet the cancer returned.

After exhausting all other options, Weiss approached family members and friends asking them to consider donating half of their liver. Friend Sonnet Force was selected as a match and did not hesitate to volunteer to donate. Although both Weiss and Force endured post-procedural complications, they remain strong friends. Weiss states, "Her act of giving taught me, and my family, the true meaning of generosity, friendship and what it means to put the needs of others first." Click here to read the full article.
