Give hope and a future to neuroendocrine tumor patients: donate to CFCF where 100% of all individual donations go to carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumor research. CFCF is a 501(c)(3) organization-all contributions are tax-deductible. We want our donors to know that we are allocating their donations responsibly and wisely to achieve a carcinoid cure as quickly as possible.

New Research Blog
Edward M. Wolin, MD, Co-Director, Cedars-Sinai Carcinoid and Neuroendocrine Tumor Center, blogs about the use of somatostatin analogs in treating carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors.
Dr. Wolin recently spoke at the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation's inaugural Awareness Weekend in Los Angeles. In his blog, Dr. Wolin discusses the PROMID study as well as other advances in the development of somatastatin analogs used to treat neuroendocrine tumor patients, including octreotide LAR, lanreotide, and pasireotide. Breaking News for Carcinoid and Neuroendocrine Tumor Patients
PROMID Results Published
Results from the first Placebo-controlled, double-blind, prospective Randomized study
on the effect of Octreotide LAR in the control of tumor growth in
patients with metastatic neuroendocrine MIDgut tumors (PROMID study) were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The PROMID study shows that octreotide LAR lengthens the median time to tumor progression compared with placebo in patients with metastatic NETs of the midgut.

In the same issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology Kjell Öberg, MD, PhD, Uppsala University Hospital, writes an editorial titled, "Is it Time to Widen the Use of Somatostatin Analogs in Neuroendocrine Tumors?" Dr Öberg concludes by writing, "The answer to the question in the title of this editorial will be "yes" for well-differentiated, low-proliferating neuroendocrine tumors, but "maybe" for other subtypes of neuroendocrine tumors." Phase I Data Presented on Azedra Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals reported one-year follow-up data from a Phase I dose-escalation clinical study of Azedra™.
In the 12-month data presented at the North American Neuroendocrine
Tumor Society (NANETS) 2009 Neuroendocrine Tumor Symposium in
Charlotte, North Carolina, a single dose of Azedra was shown to be well
tolerated by patients with neuroendocrine cancers, pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. Toxicities were predictable and manageable. Additionally, Azedra demonstrated clinical benefit, stabilizing or
reducing tumor volumes in the majority of patients. Click

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation encourages patients to discuss these announcements with their personal physician to determine whether the treatment is appropriate for him/her. In Pursuit of a Cure
Matthew L. Meyerson, MD, PhD is among the three young investigators to be the recipients of this year's Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research, a prize awarded biennially to scientists under the age of forty-six by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
"With the ongoing revolution in genome technology, we need complete characterization of the cancer genome and all the genetic alterations that cause cancer," Dr. Meyerson said. "We're at a point where it's possible, and this goal is very much in sight."
"Matthew's findings have changed the treatment of adenocarcinomas of the lung," said James D. Griffin, Chairman of the Department of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber, who nominated Dr. Meyerson for the prize. "This work and his ongoing work characterizing other genomic changes in lung cancers have placed him at the forefront of developing personalized therapy for patients with this deadly disease."

CFCF is proud to fund Dr. Meyerson to study the genome of carcinoid tumors. Thanks to the generous support of our donors and athletes, CFCF is funding Dr. Meyerson to perform the first large-scale genomic survey of carcinoid, the goal of which is to find novel targets for carcinoid treatment and to facilitate the development of new targeted therapies and better diagnostics for patients. |

Recipes and Nutrition Hints
The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation is working hard to increase the availability of nutritional resources for carcinoid and NET patients.
Rachel Beller MS, RD of the Beller Nutritional Institute recently presented at the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation's inaugural Awareness Weekend in Los Angeles. Her presentation contained multiple nutritional strategies for carcinoid patients. To learn these and more, click here.
Recently, the American Cancer Society released a cookbook entitled "What to Eat During Cancer Treatment." To learn more about the book's release, click here & here. |

CFCF in Action
It has been quite a summer and fall for Kari Jones, founder of Indy Carcinoid Awareness Network (ICAN). To read more about Kari's activities, click here.
In July, Kari and ICAN celebrated the group's one-year anniversary. As part of the celebration, Dr. Paul Helft, an oncologist from the IU Simon Cancer Center, was on hand to answer patient questions in an informal "Ask the MD" session. Kari's brother, Josh Houston, is running the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, October 11th. Kari has helped Josh with his fundraising efforts while spreading awareness of carcinoid. She has come up with some pretty creative approaches, including the "Cupcakes for Carcinoid Month." Support Josh and all the members of the Team CFCF-Chicago Marathon by visiting CFCF's Chicago Marathon page. | |
