Welcome!

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF) is the leading 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to discovering a cure for carcinoid cancer.

Did you know?

Did you know that the incidence and prevalence of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors have been increasing faster than other cancers in the U.S.?

  • Bronchial carcinoids are on the rise.
  • Diagnosis in African Americans has increased sharply.

NANCY O'HAGAN WRITES NEW BLOG
Nancy OHagan photo
Nancy O'Hagan, metastatic carcinoid patient, CFCF Founder and President, blogs about (1) clinical trials and (2) the latest Carcinoid and NET Scientific Conference jointly sponsored by the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation and the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation.

Please e-mail Nancy about your clinical trial experience.  What should have been done differently?  Did you receive proper care?

DR. DANIEL CHUNG DISCUSSES A NEW CARCINOID- RELATED DISCOVERY
Discovery about the role of HoxC6 may lead to new treaments.

Dr. Daniel ChungDr. Daniel Chung is a funded CFCF scientist and Clinical Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics Department at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Chung blogs about his discovery (published in Gastroentereology and linked below) that a protein (HoxC6) is dramatically overexpressed in GI carcinoids, but is at normal levels in normal tissues-implying that this protein and its corresponding Hox gene have a role in tumor formation.

Dr. Chung's research implies that new targets exist for treatment.  Translational discovery now becomes critically important.

Dr. Chung, CFCF-funded scientist and Clinical Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics Department at Massachusetts General Hospital is on-call through October 31st.

Ask Dr. Chung about:
  • His publication or blog described above and what it means for patients;
  • GI cancer genetics; or
  • the September 2007 NCI NET Conference.  Dr. Chung helped to co-author the publication summarizing this conference, which CFCF and other non-profits and companies helped to sponsor.  For this publication-see below (Priorities For Improving the Managment of Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors).

ASK THE DOCTOR - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
suzanne dixon Suzanne Dixon answers your nutrition questions

Question:
Is sugar-corn syrup, white sugar, etc-harmful to cancer patients?  That is, does it cause tumors to grow? A lot of people say this.  I love desserts, so I'd like to know if I need to reduce my daily sugar consumption or if sugar is fine in moderation.

Answer:
This is a great question and I get asked this often. Unfortunately, the facts about sugar and cancer can be confusing and often are presented in a way that is misleading and anxiety- producing for people with cancer...

PRIORITIES FOR IMPROVING THE MANAGEMENT OF GASTROENTEROPANCREATIC NEUROENDOCRINE TUMORS
Breaking newsRecently published in the Journal of National Cancer Institute are the September 2007 NCI NET Scientific Conference results.

A National Cancer Institute summit meeting on gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine and carcinoid tumors was held in September 2007 to present the currently accepted standards of care for patients with these tumors and to identify areas requiring investigation and development.

The authors identify "[t]he most pressing needs were public and physician education, identification of molecular markers for early diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring, improved imaging modalities and molecular prognostication, development of a standardized pathological classification system, and creation of regional centers of expertise  with tumor and laboratory data banks. In addition, adequately validated neuroendocrine tumor models and cell lines should be  established to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in the control of their growth and secretion, and to facilitate the  development of specific therapies that should be examined in well-designed multicenter studies of defined patient groups."

PANCREATIC TUMOR PATIENTS:
RAD001 IN PHASE III TRIALS
Doctor-Patient PhotoNew data show that combination treatment with RAD001 (everolimus) and Sandostatin LAR(R) Depot (octreotide acetate for injectable suspension) and
RAD001 given alone control tumor growth in patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

In the RADIANT-1 (RAD001 in Advanced Neuroendocrine Tumors) trial, patients with pancreatic NET who became resistant to chemotherapy were given either daily RAD001 combined with monthly Sandostatin LAR Depot or daily RAD001 alone. The results showed that 82% of patients receiving combination therapy and 77% receiving monotherapy had tumors that either decreased in size or remained stable.

Two Phase III trials investigating the use of RAD001 and Sandostatin LAR Depot are underway in patients with pancreatic NET and carcinoid tumors. The endpoints will be progression-free survival and overall survival.

These results were presented at the 33rd European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress in Stockholm, Sweden.

TEAM CFCF-BOSTON WALKED TO A CURE
Jimmy Fund WalkSeptember 21, 2008 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk

Team CFCF-Boston walked to a cure on September 21, 2008.

Our team raised $15,000 for research and raised awareness for carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumors.

These CFCF walkers then joined CFCF bikers at a potluck dinner hosted by Anne Doyle and her family.  Together this group cheered their success in raising over $300,000 for carcinoid/NET research.

The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk gives participants the opportunity to follow the course of the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon in honor or memory of friends, family, co-workers, and patients facing all forms of cancer.

Every dollar raised will directly fund cutting-edge carcinoid and NET research. Walk to a cure!  Put it on your calendar for next fall.

TWO CFCF-SPONSORED PATIENT SUPPORT CONFERENCES
CFCF sunflowerIn September, CFCF supported two patient conferences through it's Sunflower Grant Program.

On September 20, the SEA4 Carcinoid Support Group held an informative conference on carcinoid and NETs.  Included in the program were presentations from esteemed clinicians on the basics of carcinoid treatment and diagnosis, the importance of a "team" approach to care, management of liver metastasis, new therapeutic options, new clinical trials and wellness.

On September 26, the New England Carcinoid Connection held it's regional conference for carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumor patients.  This conference drew many esteemed clinicians whose presentations included information on: angiogenesis & angiogenesis inhibitors, liver-directed therapies, as well as new treatments and clinical trials for NET patients.

CFCF proudly supported these conferences because CFCF believes strongly in educating and empowering patients. CFCF is grateful to the many patients, physicians and volunteers who made these conferences available to patients.
