CFCF-FUNDED RESEARCHER STUDIES EFFECTS OF SUNITINIB IN NEUROENDOCRINE TUMOR PATIENTS
clinical oncologyDr. Matthew Kulke reports results published in "The Journal of Clincal Oncology."

PET patients: sunitinib is associated with objective tumor responses.
Carcinoid AND PET patients: sunitinib was associated with preserved quality of life.
Ask YOUR doctor.

Sunitinib malate is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor that inhibits the VEGF pathway.  In this study sunitinib was evaluated in a phase II open-label study to assess the safety and efficacy of sunitinib in patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors.

The authors summarize the results as follows: "This multicenter, phase II study demonstrated that sunitinib is associated with antitumor activity in patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors.  The ORR was greater in patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (16.7%) than in patients with carcinoid tumors (2.4%)  In both patient populations, administration of sunitinib was associated with preserved quality of life.  Our observation that sunitinib seems to be more active in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors than in carcinoid tumors mirrors similar observations with more cytotoxic agents."

ASK THE DOCTOR - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
kulkeDr. Matthew Kulke Gives You Answers

Dr. Kulke provides answers to the questions that matter most to you.

Question:
Once a carcinoid tumor has been found and removed, are you at an increased risk for developing additional carcinoid tumors?  For instance, if a rectal carcinoid was found, are you at risk of developing one in your small bowel or stomach?

Answer:
It would be very unusual to develop a second primary carcinoid tumor. There are some studies suggesting that carcinoid tumor patients may have a slightly greater risk of developing other malignancies like colon or breast cancer. Often, when one cancer is diagnosed, patients and their physicians stop screening for other cancers. Carcinoid patients who are otherwise healthy should generally continue normal screening procedures (e.g mammogram and colonoscopy).

CARCINOID/NET IN THE NEWS!

Some truly inspirational stories from this year's Pan-Mass Challenge
Gavin and Craig Berkson
Taking It In His Stride

Craig Berkson, diagnosed with a fist-sized carcinoid in 2004, observes, "It's funny: I'm in the best shape of my life right now." The 42 year old from Framingham lives a life full of optimism, hope and lots of cycling. Although he underwent more than 12 hours of surgery to remove the tumor and had to spend a month recovering in hospital, he now works full time and also cycles as much as 120 miles per week to prepare for his 153-mile PMC route. "I want to live my life. I want to try to find a cure for this thing", Berkson says.

Beating the Odds

When diagnosed with carcinoid cancer, Lisa Paiva faced 90 percent odds that the cancer would be terminal. Now, seven years later, the 35 year-old Bedford resident prepares for her second Pan-Massachusetts challenge. "Riding a bike has been a major stress reliever for me. Hopefully it is only a matter of time until they find a cure for carcinoid cancer. Since my diagnosis, I have never taken a single second of my life for granted. Every day is a gift," Paiva says.
