|
CFCF presents scientific updates to patients.
Dr. Seung K. Kim, M.D., Ph.D., an Associate Professor at Stanford University, was recently selected as one of the 2008 Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigators. To read about Dr. Kim's appointment go to:
Dr. Kim writes a new scientific blog discussing his progress in developing a mouse 'model' of carcinoid, which "if successful, could lead to better understanding about the molecular and cellular changes that lead to formation of carcinoid tumors, and to better ways of testing and discovering new therapies for carcinoid."

| CFCF-FUNDED RESEARCHERS STUDY CHROMOSOMAL ABNORMALITIES IN PRIMARY AND METASTATIC SMALL BOWEL CARCINOID TUMORS |
|
Dr. Matthew Kulke and Dr. Ramesh Shivdasani report results published in the peer reviewed scientific journal, "Genes, Chromosomes, and Cancer."
The authors state:
"In summary, focal deletions and high-level amplifications, as reported in other malignancies, appear to be rare in small bowel carcinoid tumors; regional amplifications that occur in the region of the antiapoptotic gene DAD1 and the G protein-coupled odorant receptor gene OR4A5 on chromosome arm 11p warrant further investigation. Instead, ileal carcinoid tumors carry large regions of genetic loss or modest gain in both primary and metastatic lesions, suggesting that such changes occur relatively early in carcinoid pathogenesis and that modest gains in CN may have a strong impact on cell behavior in this disease. "

July 26, 2008 Run For Hope
Join Team CFCF to raise money for carcinoid and NET research.
CFCF proudly supports the annual Run for Hope hosted by Jeanne Lambert. Jeanne has dedicated this year's event to Lee Curtis who died of carcinoid cancer on Aug 21, 2007. Jeanne's dedication is as follows: "The 2008 Run for Hope 5K is dedicated in honor and memory of Lee Curtis (our #1 registrant from our first 5K, committee member, brother, husband and friend to all). Lee was unable to attend this past race due to his end of life struggle with carcinoid cancer. Pictured above are Lee and I the afternoon of the 5K event, August 11th, 2007. It was clear to me our earthly hellos and goodbyes were imminent. Needless to say, that afternoon was a difficult and tearful time - not just that day, but for the next ten days when it was time to say our forever goodbye. Lee died of complications from carcinoid cancer on August 21st, 2007. The good news is, one blessed day, we will say hello again and he will be so proud of all for our continual effort as each 5K event will be equal to a pebble thrown into the ocean and finally a wave will result...then as with HOPE comes REALITY, Cancer will be NO MORE! It will not have been in vain but truly a completed "RUN for HOPE"!" To register please go to:
