Calling all patients!
CFCF introduces "Ask the Doctor." Do you have questions about science or clinical treatment? Ask the Doctor! This month Dr. Kulke is on-call. Dr. Matthew Kulke of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and co-Chairman, CFCF Board of Scientific Advisors, recently highlighted progress in the field of neuroendocrine tumor research. Read Dr. Kulke's blogTo submit your questions please email:
Responses to the most frequently asked questions will be in the next E-Update. E-mails that ask for medical advice about an individual's personal medical situation cannot be answered. Please see CFCF's User Agreement for more information |
CFCF-FUNDED RESEARCHERS IDENTIFY A NOVEL SET OF GENES
|
|
Dr. Daniel Chung and Dr. Matthew Kulke report results published in the peer reviewed scientifc journal, "Endocrine-Related Cancer."
The authors state:
"In summary, we have identified a novel set of genes that may play a role in the pathogenesis and progression of PNETs and GI-NETs. Our results reveal a correlation with the WHO histologic classification on a molecular level... By improving the molecular classification of these tumor subtypes, we may ultimately enhance our ability to predict tumor behavior, provide important new insights into the molecular biology and tumor pathogenesis, and design the next generation of targeted therapies."

July 11, 2008 Boston Harbor Island Swim
Join Team CFCF and renowned carcinoid doctor, Matthew Kulke, and swim to a cure for carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors.
A Swim Across America event, the Boston Harbor Islands Swim is a 22 mile relay style open water swim that starts and finishes at Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston. Each participant will swim in a 15 minute session (heat) approximately 4 - 6 times throughout the day. Swimmers will be assigned to a heat with swimmers of similar ability.

About Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals
Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals (MIP) is supporting team CFCF in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and Swim Across America Boston Harbor Swim. Why is Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals supporting carcinoid and related NET patients? Molecular Insight specializes in the emerging field of molecular medicine, applying innovations in the identification and targeting of disease at the molecular level to improve patient care by addressing significant unmet medical needs. The Company is committed to improving healthcare for patients with life-threatening diseases. Molecular Insight is developing Azedra, a novel targeted radiotherapeutic, for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors. Azedra is based on the known 1-131 MIBG molecule, a targeted radiotherapy that has been researched internationally with evidence that it is effective in treating several types of neuroendocrine tumors. Azedra is optimized by the Company's proprietary Ultratrace™ technology. Ultratrace allows Molecular Insight to provide patients with the benefits of Azedra free of cold contaminants, which are unnecessary, nonradioactive targeting molecules present in the traditional MIBG formulation that may produce undesirable side effects and reduce efficacy. In addition, Ultratrace maximizes delivery of therapeutic radiation to tumors. "Azedra exemplifies Molecular Insight's strategy to apply its radiochemistry expertise to improve an existing therapy. Current targeted radiotherapies for cancer suffer from sub-optimal radiochemistry, which leads to an excess of non-therapeutic, cold contaminant molecules administered to patients. These cold contaminants compete for tumor binding and reduce the amount of therapeutic radiopharmaceutical that can bind the cancer cells. Our proprietary Ultratrace technology eliminates the presence of cold contaminants, creating a product that contains only radiolabeled molecules," said John W. Babich, President and CSO of Molecular Insight. "We believe that this ultrapurity, or lack of cold contaminants, produces optimal tumor uptake and efficacy." Ruth Gerdes, member of CFCF's Board of Patient Advisors, shares her story of partnering with her physicians.
"There's nothing wrong with Ruth Gerdes' hearing. But when an oncologist in Lincoln told her the carcinoid tumors in her liver were inoperable and that she had no hope for a cure, she refused to listen..."
