NANCY O'HAGAN WRITES NEW BLOG
Nancy O'Hagan"100 Years+ and So What?"
Nancy O'Hagan, CFCF Founder and President, wrote a new blog.  It begins:
"Hi Everyone!

Congratulations-this month will be a terrific month for carcinoid and related neureondocrine tumor patients! The NIH/NCI will be hosting the first-ever Carcinoid Summit as a result of language in a House Report that accompanied a House Bill sponsored by Congressman Ralph Regula."  (continued)
DR. MEYERSON ISSUES 2007 PROGRESS REPORT
Matthew MeyersonCFCF-funded researcher at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Dr. Matthew Meyerson at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute issued his 2007 Progress Report.

The overall goal of Dr. Meyerson's project is to build on his previous discovery that the menin tumor suppressor protein is coupled to histone methylase activity that regulates histone H3 lysine 4 methylation.  This result suggests that tumors lacking the MEN1 gene may have defective histone methylation.

CFCF-FUNDED RESEARCH APPEARS IN CLINICAL CANCER RESEARCH
Clinical Cancer ResearchPeer-reviewed publication
An article entitled, "The Development and Characterization of a Human Midgut Carcinoid Cell Line" appeared in the peer-reviewed journal, Clinical Cancer Research.  This article recognizes the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation for its research funding support.

The authors are George Van Buren II, Asif Rashid, Anthony D. Yang, Eddie K. Abdalla, Michael J. Gray, Wenbiao Liu, Ray Somcio, Fan Fan, E. Ramsay Camp, James C. Yao, and Lee M. Ellis.

The authors state:
"Gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are rare heterogeneous tumors that hypersecrete neuropeptides.  The scarcity of good gastrointestinal NET models has limited the ability to study potential therapeutic agents.  We describe and characterize the establishment of a human midgut carcinoid tumor cell line carcinoid tumor 2 (CNDT2). ...

The establishment of this human midgut carcinoid tumor cell line may serve as a useful model system for studying cell biology and novel targeted agents in preclinical models."
CFCF-FUNDED RESEARCH APPEARS IN PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
PNASPeer-reviewed publication
An article entitled, "Enteroendocrine precursors differentiate independently of Wnt and form serotonin expressing adenomas in response to active B-catenin" appeared in the peer-reviewed journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  This article recognizes the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation for its research funding support.

The authors are Yang Wang, Maryann Giel-Moloney, Guido Rindi, and Andrew B. Leiter.

The authors state:
"These results provide direct evidence that some intestinal lineages are specified independently of the Wnt pathway and may lead to a better understanding of the spectrum of neuroendocrine differentiation frequently seen in human gastrointestinal cancer."
TEAM CFCF RAISES $250,000 IN 2007 PAN-MASS CHALLENGE
2007 PMCRecord-breaking fundraising for carcinoid research
Team Caring for Carcinoid Foundation completed a highly successful Pan-Mass Challenge on August 4-5, 2007.

Team CFCF raised $250,000.  We are grateful that every dollar is matched by the Steve and Caroline Kaufer Foundation--bringing the total to an astonishing $500,000.  Every dollar directly funds cutting-edge carcinoid research.

Congratulations, Team CFCF!

TEAM CFCF IN 2007 CHICAGO MARATHON
Chicago marathon34 runners projected to raise over $40,000
Team CFCF has an astounding 34 runners entered in the 2007 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon on October 7, 2007.

Every dollar raised by Team CFCF directly funds cutting-edge carcinoid research.

Jamie Koch, for example, is running to honor Brad Monks:
"My friend and fraternity brother, Brad Monks, lost his battle with carcinoid in February of this year.  Before Brad was diagnosed, I had never heard of carcinoid cancer.

CFCF is the leading non-profit organization dedicated to discovering a cure for carcinoid.  As was his nature, Brad threw himself wholeheartedly into fundraising efforts on behalf of CFCF and he was viewed as an inspiration in the carcinoid community.

This is the first year that CFCF is sponsoring a team in the Chicago Marathon and it is my goal to raise awareness and funds for this organization and its mission that meant so much to Brad.

I will be training for this marathon solo, which can be difficult.  I would like to think that many of you could serve as my "mental" support team during some of those long training runs, and that, working together, we can reach my stated goal of raising $5,000 (or more) for Brad and CFCF."
Jamie has raised $3,650.  Help Jamie reach $5,000!
