NCI CARCINOID SUMMIT
NCISeptember 24-25, 2007
CFCF is delighted to announce significant progress in planning the NCI Carcinoid Summit.  The event is confirmed for September 24-25, 2007 in Washington, DC.  CFCF will announce additional details as they are confirmed.

CFCF's top priority in our 2007 Research Action Plan is to facilitate and ensure that the NCI Carcinoid Summit occurs.  NCI is the world's largest funder of cancer research.  NCI is the U.S. government's principal agency for cancer research with a budget greater than $5 billion.

CFCF's 2007 Research Action Plan is aggressive in order to revolutionize carcinoid/NET research and rapidly discover a cure.

CFCF PROFILED IN IMPACT MAGAZINE
Impact Meyerson"Caring for Carcinoid Furthers Research into Often Overlooked Cancer"
CFCF was profiled in Impact magazine for funding new cutting-edge carcinoid research at Dana-Farber:

"The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation selected Matthew Meyerson, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Genome Discovery, as the recipient of its latest award to Dana-Farber, a two-year, $250,000 grant in support of his genetic research into carcinoid tumors.

Meyerson's research parallels the second step in the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation's research roadmap--mapping the pathways of carcinoid cell growth and proliferation--by focusing on a mutated tumor suppressor gene in carcinoid patients called MEN1.

'Nancy is an inspiring woman who has taken her battle with carcinoid tumors and used it to improve research and treatment for all carcinoid patients,' said Meyerson.  'I am delighted to work with the wonderful foundation she has created.'"

CARCINOID RESEARCH AT ASCO
ASCONovel Therapies in Neuroendocrine Tumors
At the 2007 ASCO Annual Meeting, researchers delivered several presentations about carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumor research.  These presentations included:
  • James Yao, MD - "Phase II study of RAD001 (everolimus) and depot octreotide (sandostatin LAR) in advanced low grade neuroendocrine carcinoma (LGNET)"
  • Timothy Hobday, MD - "MC044h, a phase II trial of sorafenib in patients (pts) with metastatic neuroendocrine tumors (NET):  A Phase II Consortium (P2C) study"
  • Matthew Kulke, MD - "Prediction of response to temozolomide (TMZ)-based therapy by loss of MGMT expression in patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors (NET)"

CFCF is honored to present Survivor Stories.  They reflect remarkable courage and determination.

Claire Gibbons just posted her Survivor Story:

"I LOVE my work!  I work with students who have been identified as challenged either mentally, physically, or with multiple issues.  I help them with their basic educational needs as a teacher.

I have wonderful neighbors who insist that I shall and will beat this crazy diagnosis called carcinoid cancer.  I attend all the relays for life that I can and look into trying to start a carcinoid cancer team."

PAN-MASS CHALLENGE
PMC Training RideTeam CFCF Update
Team CFCF had a wonderful get-together on June 2, 2007.

Bikers were underway at 7:30am.  We joined together after our training ride to carbo load and hear Dr. Andrew Leiter, a CFCF 2006 research grantee, speak about his exciting research.

Anne Doyle and her family--Jim, Chris, and Corey Stock--generously hosted us  at their home.  Thank you to the Doyle-Stock family, to Fan and Peter Watkinson for organizing rides and leading bikers, and a huge thank you to the 16 riders who joined our training ride and brunch.

Team members also heard from Nancy O'Hagan about the progress that our PMC fundraising is making to build a biobank of carcinoid/NET tissues and patient clinical information that researchers worldwide can access.  We are grateful that every dollar we raise for Team Caring for Carcinoid Foundation will be matched by the Steve and Caroline Kaufer Foundation.

Keep spinning!  And don't forget to mark your calendars for our next (longer) training ride on July 7, 2007.
