In February Denver Health Paramedics Josh Appel and Adrian Vanderberg responded to a motorcycle accident. They found the patient with multiple severe injuries. They quickly assessed and stabilized the patient and transported him to Swedish Medical Center.
On arrival, the patient went to the operating room to address a bilateral subdural hemorrhage, an intraventricular hemorrhage, a C3 transverse process fracture, a nasal bone fracture, T 7-9 superior endplate fractures, right 8-12 rib fractures, bilateral pulmonary contusions, an open book pelvic fracture, a right femur fracture, a mesenteric tear and right leg amputation. Appel's and Vanderberg's quick response and care led to Swedish's ability to stabilize and treat the patient. After several days of difficult deliberation and consulting with a neuro physician, the patient's family decided to withdraw care.
Thank you Paramedics Appel and Vanderberg for your skill and caring.
Swedish Medical Center and HealthONE EMS created the EPIC Award and Coin to recognize EMS calls that are clinically challenging and require logical decision making in stressful situations.
