TONY STARLIGHT'S Newsletter
"I'm gonna be on the Tee Vee"

June 2008
Everybody,
May 2008 was our second busiest month since our opening and we thank you all for making it possible!  Our feature on the Emmy Award Winning television program pdxposed is done and will air on Comcast soon.  click here for a first look.

There are so many exciting things happening this Summer, I'm not sure where to begin.  We will be performing our outdoor stage on Third Thursdays at 40th & NE Hancock (3 blocks NE of our location) again this Summer June 19th, July 17th, August 21st and September 18th from 6-9 pm.  We feature live music for all ages, so bring the kids.  I always have a few guests join in the fun.  Refreshments are provided by our friends at Perkins Architecture, your Hollywood Architect.

Also:  Our chef Tom Field and his staff have created a new menu for the warmer days.  We have added several new salads, sandwiches and Entrees and have brought back a few favorites from last year.  Our second annual tributes to Dean Martin (June 5th & 7th) and James Bond (next month on July 10th) are just around the corner.  A whole host of favorites like The Shanghai Woolies, The Midnight Serenaders and The Bureau of Standards Big Band will be back to entertain you and we'll welcome Mia Nicholson to our stage for the first time.  We'll be raising money for the Jazz Society of Oregon with Linda Daiber and the Jazz Express Big Band.  We'll also be having our first listener party for 89.1 FM KMHD's "Divaville".  You will also have the chance to sign up to sing with with a real live big band!

Finally, you may have noticed our new signage designed and painted by our hostess Kristen Behlings.  You can thank her when you see her on a Friday night or in our next Vintage Fashion Show June 24th.

Fondly,

Mr & Mrs S and the gang

MITZI ZILKA'S JAZZ VOCALIST SHOWCASE
"THE SONGS OF TONY BENNETT"
7:30pm $5
Mitzi's showcase has been introducing Portlanders to new and seasoned voices for a couple years, and now it makes it's way to our stage for a salute to the songs of Tony Bennett.
Michael Winkle, Liz Coffman, George Sullivan and Mitzi Zilka are scheduled to perform.  mitzizilka

Tuesday June 17th
BARBARA AYARS, RITA MARQUEZ 7:30 $5

With Reece Marshburn on piano you will be treated to two dynamite vocalists. Barbara Ayars is my favorite singer. For years she sang backups for the likes of Steve & Eydie, Bobby Vinton and Esquival, but now she's out front and is a true pop vocalist in the tradition of Petula Clark or Judy Garland. Opening the show is one of Barbara's protgs, Rita Marquez who has been taking Barbara's performance workshop for several months and has been pleasing crowds at every showcase. ax2music

Wednesday June 18th
MIA NICHOLSON
"COLE PORTER TRIBUTE" 7:30pm $5

Making her debut with us is Mia Nicholson. Mia is a fantastic jazz singer whose warm and sultry tone make her the perfect "torch singer". But this gal can also swing and she'll be singing the swingingest Cole Porter tunes you ever heard. Hear a sample at her website.  mianicholson

THE SHANGHAI WOOLIES

The world's greatest band. I love these guys (and you do too.) It's hard to get a seat for these nights, so act fast! Gavin Bondy (Pink Martini) leads this band of superstars including the captivating Mel Kubic (Quarterflash) on lead vocals. They play spectacular arrangements of Ellington, Armstrong and a few surprises.

The first show will last from 8 to 9:30. You will have until 9:45 to vacate your seats in the dining room to allow us to prepare for the 10:30 show, which will begin seating at 10 pm. If there are not sufficient reservations for the late show you will be allowed to stay for no extra charge, or you may find room in the bar or casual dining area. The second set is ideal for dancing!  shanghaiwoolies

Thursday June 12th & Thursday June 26th
LINDA LEE MICHELET (PICTURED ABOVE)
"BIG BAND PEGGY LEE" 8pm $8

I can't believe there are any seats left when this show hits our stage. Joe Millward leads an All-Star band (Dave Captein, Paul Mazzio, Don Janssen, Marty Higgins, Lars Campbell, Tim Jenson & Dave Evans) that swings charts written by Quincy Jones, laying the perfect backdrop for Linda's Peggy Lee tribute. Linda is a remarkable performer who loves the idea of show business and our club is tailor-made for her show. She was recently featured on OPB's Art Beat.  lindamichelet
