Growing Tip of the Month  -  by Liese
Liese Head Shot         Fungus Among-us!
January:  short days, overcast skies, cool temperatures - uh!  All of the above add up to a perfect breeding ground for black rot, fungus, bacteria and mold.  These can and will attack your potting media and the leaves and roots of your orchids.  To prevent this from happening, try to water lightly and only when your plants are thoroughly dried out.  Any extra air movement you can generate will also help.

If you are growing in a greenhouse, set your temperatures up 5-10 degrees during and the after watering (overnight).  This will also help to dry out your plants.  If plants are wet and then become cool at night, black rot and bacteria will grow.  Phyton

It is also good to have a fungicide/bactericide on hand, such as Phyton 27 or Captan.  These will stop the bacteria and fungus from spreading.  Physan 20 can also be used mixed in with your watering on a monthly basis to prevent molds and algae from forming.

Black rot and bacterial spots can attack soft-leafed orchids like Phalaenopsis and Paphs very rapidly.  Make sure to watch your orchids carefully this time of year.  If treated quickly, your plants will not suffer and will make it through the winter months happy and healthy.

Good growing,
Liese
We wish you health and happiness in 2008!

Sincerely,
