Winterizing!
Liese does the growing around here, so I'm not gonna even try to "wow" you with advice on how to accelerate your plants toward specimen size. Plus, this time of year there is not much "growing" going on around here in this climate--even in a greenhouse. In fact, the stress and struggle through the winter involves just keeping them alive!
Every year we hear horror stories from customers who have lost some or most of their plant collection to the elements. Most of the time it involves freezing temperatures and failing greenhouse heating equipment. Just in the past two weeks, I myself have lost many hours of sleep (see photo) due to our greenhouse alarm going off in the middle of the night - a failing pump, a busted switch, a clogged pilot light, a tired boiler flame safeguard (a box about the size of a Rubik's Cube that cost us $1400 to replace - ouch!).
So I guess the lesson for this month would be to first make a mental note of how much time and money you have invested to build your collection. Then, spend a little money and time to take steps to maximize the chances of your plants making it through the harsh months of winter unscathed. Some things to think about:
*Insulate your greenhouse or growing area as thoroughly as possible (we use foamboard for doorways, removable caulk for windows, cracks, etc.)
*Have your heating system inspected by a professional before the cold weather sets in. Make sure that you have replacement fuses and other working parts on hand in case of emergency.
*Install or purchase an alarm (low temp alarms can be purchased that ring your phone!) and install or purchase a generator in case of electrical failure.
Don't end up like me; sleep soundly!
