| Dear Customer and Friend,
Around here the weather is turning, and the winterization of the greenhouses has begun. Insulation has been applied, and shading has been lessened significantly in order to allow more light into the greenhouses during the shorter fall and winter days.
With oil prices skyrocketing, we are hoping for another mild winter ahead, although we are certainly due for the opposite!
However, it is not too cold to ship orchids! We have had very few instances of plant damage due to cold over the years. By utilizing double boxing, heat packs, and plenty of interior packing material, we are able to ship plants nationwide even when the low temps here are into the mid-to-high 20's.
We guarantee safe arrival of plants. If and when we do experience cold damage during shipping, we gladly replace the plants or refund the cost. In the event of extreme weather, we may hold your order until better conditions allow. However, we have no "cut-off" date for shipping, we just watch the weather nationwide week-to-week.
We invite you to check out the November special below and also to visit our homepage to see over two dozen varieties available in spike/bud!! The fall bloomers are poppin'!
Also, it's never too early to think about gift certificates for your friends and loved ones for the holidays!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Oak Hill Gardens!
Best wishes,
Greg, Liese and Hermann |

Watering Routines
November is upon us and the climate is changing! Daylight hours are shorter, the sun less intense; nights are becoming much cooler. During the late fall and winter months, our watering routines must also change.
If you are growing in a greenhouse, the cooler night temperatures will cause your plants stay wet longer. During the shorter days the plants also drink less water. Try to water on sunny days and in the morning so the plants can dry off a bit before the cool night air arrives. Any extra air circulation also helps the plants dry out faster. Water with a lighter hand and less often when a cooler environment presents itself.
If you are growing in a home, the opposite is often the case. In a home, furnaces pump out dry, hot air and plants will dry out much more quickly. Watering twice a week may be required in dry homes. Keeping the temperatures in your home a bit cooler, i.e. between 62-65 degrees, will help your plants thrive. And, after all, what is more important, your comfort or the health of your plants?!
Also, introducing a humidifier or even an indoor fountain near your plants will increase humidity and make your plants happier! Wherever your growing area might be, make sure to keep an eye on your watering routines! As the seasons change, so must your care!
Happy Growing!
