Issue: # 3 September 2007
Hi there!

We hope that your summer has gone well, and that you have been able to escape at least some of the heat that has permeated almost our entire nation this season.  The plants here have certainly enjoyed it, but the humans have suffered some in the process!

The end of summer means that the Fall orchid show season is nearing, and what better way to kick it off than the 15th Annual Chicagoland Orchid Festival!  The festival takes place at four different nurseries here in the Chicago area, including Oak Hill Gardens.  The dates are Friday-Sunday, September 21-22-23, 2007.  Only three weeks away!

In addition to free refreshments and free plants with every purchase here are Oak Hill, we will be hosting six guest growers/suppliers from all over the country.  The other three hosting locations will have similar attractions.  See the festival website at the link below for details:

Liese has once again graced us with more wisdom on orchid growing with another "Tip of the Month" for September.  You can find that article further down the page, as well.

Thank you for your continued support!  We hope to see you at the festival in a few weeks.

Best Wishes,
Greg, Liese and Hermann

Please join us for this incredibly fun event.  It takes place simultaneously at Oak Hill Gardens, Orchids by Hausermann, Natt's Orchids, and Windsong Orchids.  The idea is to visit each greenhouse over the three day weekend.

Each greenhouse will have special deals and guest growers, who will bring their specialties to sell and their knowledge to share through lectures/programs.  Details by location can be found on the website.

As we do every year, a Grand Prize drawing will be held for a total of $1000 worth of orchids!  There will be seven winners! All that is required is that you visit all four hosting locations and collect their respective "stamps" over the three day span of the festival!  Be sure to print out the details and application form at the link below and enter to win!

Growing Tip of the Month - by Liese
Liese Head Shot              Fall Re-potting

September is the perfect time to finish up your re-potting.  Plants will still produce new root growth into early fall.  Make sure that you use a high quality mix that won't retain too much water.

Repot orchids with pseudobulbs (i.e. Dendrobiums, Cattleya, etc.) by the end of September at the latest.  They need time to establish roots into their new pots/ media before the dormancy of winter sets in.

Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilums and cool-growing orchids can be re-potted into late fall.  Keep freshly re-potted plants on the dry side.  The plants will then send out new root growth quickly as they search for moisture.  Also, resist the temptation to "over-pot" your orchids.  Most orchids prefer smaller pots with just a bit of extra room for new growth.  Over-potting can result in the medium remaining wet for too long, which can lead to rotting of the root system.

While potting is a chore, remember, the plants will love you for it!  Have fun!
