East Town Mall Getting GREENER
Join us today at 10:00 AM for the Ribbon Cutting & Media Event
East Town Mall is in the process of getting GREENER. Scheduled for the week of April 26th, the East Town Mall will be installing 7 Mariah WindspireŠ Wind Turbines at the mall's front entrance to help power the mall with a lower cost energy source. Wind Turbines generate power when sufficient wind blows against vertical airfoils causing them to spin a generator. This power is then converted into AC electricity and is immediately available to offset power consumption in the Mall such as lighting, HVAC units, vending machines, games or anything that utilizes electricity. It is the most cost effective renewable energy appliance in the 1- kilowatt range and provides clean energy from the natural wind directly to the mall building, reducing the amount of energy needed to purchase from the utility company. Additionally, it is estimated that the resultant annual carbon reduction will be 11,553 lbs and Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 13.96 tons.
Other green initiatives East Town Mall has taken are as follows:
Over the past few months, the mall has changed all common area light fixtures within the mall to energy efficient fluorescent lighting and added common area lighting to our Energy Management System (EMS), which conserves energy by being set up on a programmable timer.
All lighting directly under the skylights have been connected through photocells, so that the lights under the skylights are not on anytime sufficient light is coming through the skylights.
In the past two years, two original HVAC roof top units have been replaced with more energy efficient models. These units are using a new refrigerant that is much less harmful to the environment.
In addition to this, all of the common area HVAC units and lighting within the mall and parking lot were placed on an Energy Management System (EMS), which maximizes the use of outside air, and controls energy consumption lowering costs and overall environmental impact.
Recycling bins have been installed at the front and Budget Cinema entrances to encourage customer recycling.
The mall has also placed a "Lions" eye glasses recycle bin on the exterior of our front entrance which utilizes frames and lens to bring thousands of poverty stricken adults and children sight each year.
Placed a "Cell Phones for Soldiers", recycle bin inside the front entrance next to the recycle bins. This program is founded by teenagers from Norwell, MA, in efforts to keep troops connected with their families. Their goal is to provide every US soldier with a way to call home for free. The cell phones are recycled for cash and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East.
The mall's cleaning contractor (KleenMark) utilizes all green products in their janitorial services for East Town Mall such as paper towels for wiping down surfaces, cloth towels for heavily soiled areas, string mops made with recycled materials, the vacuums are supplied with paper bags to reduce the amount of dust that gets into the air along with HEPA filters, and hard surfaces are broom sweep or dust mopped prior to mopping or scrubbing floors. Disinfectants used are green seal certified cleaning products.
The mall has instituted a recycling program for the tenants within the mall to reduce landfill waste and encourage the recycling of reusable materials.
In conjunction with the city of Green Bay, a ribbon cutting ceremony and press conference will be held at the East Town Mall on May 12, 2010 at 10:00 am at the Mall's front entrance, alternate location in the event of rain at the Mall center court.
