A Word From Brian

Brian enjoying the West Coast of Vancouver Island this summer.
I'm reflecting on what an amazing summer it has been so far. Even with a cool start, once summer hit at the end of June, I got busy with some great West Coast Paddling for 8 days. Then I've been exploring the Gulf Island by power boat and by kayak as my family and I settle into a wonderful little cabin in the South Gulf Islands.  I continue to be gob-struck at what beauty surrounds us and I realized that we must never take for granted, this wonderful place we live in.

This gives me great reason to try to share the outdoors with those who I can. We at ORS are always trying to remove barriers and to help any way we can to help you to experience the great outdoors.

Check out our tours as it is perfect to get right out there with the experts to allow you to experience kayaking in a safe and inspiring way.  If you are already a paddler, do not forget that our used /demo kayaks are coming on sale so check them out as there are not better deals around.  Try a Stand UP Paddling Board right off our docks by taking an intro course or by renting one and get out there!

Right now, I am in Salt Lake City as I attend the big Outdoor Retailer Summer Expo - the biggest trade show for the outdoors business in the world.  Peter, our buyer, and Justin, our retail manager are here with me as we search the world for the best products possible to carry in ORS.
Enjoy all this great weather while it lasts - I'm hoping we will have an Indian Summer - right though into October.

Cheers and happy paddling.

Brian

Paddling the Yukon River Quest 2010
By Janice Mason

If you really LOVE to paddle long distances (kayak, canoe, voyageur) and are looking for an amazing way to spend a few days, consider doing the Yukon River Quest - a 740 km race from Whitehorse to Dawson City (down river).  Not only is the Yukon a fabulous place to spend some summer days, the area is rich with historical significance (Klondike Gold Rush) and ghosts of people who have endured amazing hardships.  Now attempting to paddle 740km in less than 60 hours might seem like a hardship to most, but the folks of The Yukon do their best to make the event worthwhile and memorable, and besides, the route along the river & the countryside is just grand. Still Not A Done Deal!
Victoria International Marina Update

Since the Victoria International Marina was awarded a small permit  under the Navigational Waters Protection Act as Transport Minister John Baird described it in the House of Commons, applications have been filed in Federal Court for a Judicial Review of the decision by the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations and by Dogwood Initiative and Houlihan.  This small decision now has 3 Justice Department lawyers appointed, who asked for an extension in providing the files to the applicants and then suggested that because of the complexity of the case, it be put under case management - appointing one Federal Judge to deal with the issues. Simple decision?  Not now!
