A word from Brian... Fall is here and it's not time to retire to the couch. Tons of great things to do and we plan to keep you guys motivated. Paddling around here is a year round sport - extend your season with great gear like a dry or wet suit for sea kayaking or simply do more inlet and lake paddling if the weather is poor.
Our racers just dress a bit better and keep going and work harder when it is colder - thank goodness Victoria weather is so kind. Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is designed to keep you on top of the water
and with a little practice this is an easy year round sport.
ORS will have a great deal more winter gear this year, with Arcteryx, OR, Patagonia, and Icebreaker having alpine gear for adult and children. Our snowshoes are now in stock and on display so - check them out.
Whitewater on Vancouver Island starts as soon as the rains comes. We will have more whitewater gear this season and I'm determined to get back on the river myself.
We do live in one of the best places in the world to enjoy our outdoors year round, and Ocean River can help you "get out there".
Cheers, Brian

Proposed Marina continues to push for approval.
|
|
The proponents of the proposed Mega Marina are still pushing to try to get approval. If this marina gets approved, Victoria will loose part of it's treasured harbour and paddlers will loose the freedom of access through this very important part of our waterway. Our Victoria MP, Denise Savois has been a champion for the cause and now Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, joins in oppostion. Ocean River staff member, Tim Houlihan took Elizabeth May out in a 6 man outrigger canoe to help her understand the implication of the Marina from an outrigger canoe. www.savevictoriaharbour.com

SAVE OUR LIGHTHOUSES |
|
On Sept. 1 Canadian Lightkeepers were notified that the Canadian Coast Guard was going to commence a destaffing program for all Lightstations
that remain staffed in BC and Newfoundland Labrador. The will have drastic safety effects for paddlers and all travelers on our waterways.
Although the government has postponed the destaffing of lighthouses until a full study is done, those of us concerned should continue to by vigil. Open letter to Canadian citizens from the lighthouse keepers
