Greetings!

Welcome to Vector V-News
May 2008
We offer solutions...innovative solutions for concrete and steel corrosion.

Vector V-News highlights useful solutions and innovations in the concrete and steel repair and restoration industry.

Go Green With Vector
Rainbow BridgeYou probably know that concrete is the most common man-made building material in the world.  But did you know that each ton of cement production produces one ton of carbon dioxide?  And, that the production of each cubic yard of concrete creates enough thermal pollution to raise the temperature of 500 cubic yards of concrete by one degree?
                     Rainbow Bridge
Many of today's structures can be repaired and protected in order to avoid the cost, inconvenience, and environmental impact of replacement.  For example, by restoring rather than replacing the Historic Rainbow Bridge, the Idaho DOT not only preserved a piece of history but also reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 900 tons and prevented the release of 4,800 GJ of heat, enough to boil three olympic sized swimming pools!

PTI Attendees Learn about Post Tech

Garth at PTI in St. LouisAttendees at the recent Post Tensioning Institute Convention in St. Louis had an opportunity to learn more about evaluating corrosion in both bonded and unbonded post tensioned structures.  Corrosion of post tensioned structures can lead to an unsafe and expensive condition.  Conventional corrosion evaluation methods such as corrosion rate or half cell corrosion potential measurements are not effective or impractical to use.

At the convention, Garth Fallis presented the PostTech® PT Corrosion Evaluation system, an alternative method to evaluate corrosion in post tensioned structures.  The PostTech method makes direct measurement inside the post tensioned cable or tendon to determine if the post tensioned steel is exposed to a corrosive environment.  The attendees particularly enjoyed Garth's video exposing entrapped moisture in a grouted post tensioned tendon over 100 feet away from the air source!

Protection Systems for Marine Structures

Port CanaveralConcrete structures subject to the marine environment can show serious signs of corrosion including concrete cracking, spalling, and wide spread delaminations.  To extend the life of these structures corrosion mitigation is frequently employed.

At the ACI Spring Meeting in Los Angeles, Chris Ball presented a technical presentation entitled "Overview of Corrosion Mitigation Systems for Marine Structures".  Included in the presentation was a synopsis of systems typically utilized including impressed current cathodic protection and a wide range of galvanic protection systems. Galvanic protection systems used for concrete marine structures include; discrete embedded galvanic anodes, distributed galvanic anodes, surfaced applied galvanic protection, and galvanic jackets for pilings.

Of particlular interest to the attendees was a case study on the North Cargo Pier Repair and Protection project at Cape Canaveral, FL.  This mulit-million dollar restoration of four cargo piers uitilized a wide range of galvanic protection systems to extend the service life of the structures for more than twenty years.

Galvanic Balcony Protection

ZincSheet at Bellaire Beach 2Galvanode ® ZincSheet provides an effective low maintainance option for protectiong ocean side balconies and other structures subject to corrosive conditions.  Galvanode ZincSheet is a galvanic anode that is applied to the surface of the structure.  Once the anode is connected to the embedded reinforcing steel, the anode provides sacrificial protection.  To learn more about how Galvanode ZincSheet was recently used to protect hollow core balconies in the corrosive Florida environment, click here.
