Rainbow Bridge: Saving a Beloved Landmark |
| Rainbow Bridge, located in Valley County, Idaho is the largest single span concrete arch bridge in the State of Idaho and a landmark structure on the Payette River National Scenic Byway.
After decades of severe weather conditions, significant corrosion of the reinforcing steel and subsequent deterioration of the concrete was occuring throughout the bridge. The Idaho DOT selected Norcure Electrochemical Chloride Extraction (ECE) on the sections of the arches and main piers around the joints, and to utilize embedded Galvashield XP+ galvanic anodes in the concrete patch repairs in the non-treated areas.
At completion of the project, approximately 8,000 sq. ft. of concrete surface was treated. By including advanced corrosion mitigation technologies such as Norcure ECE and Galvashield XP+ embedded galvanic anodes, the Idaho DOT has taken a major step in preserving the bridge and reducing future maintenance concerns. |

12th Street Viaduct: Kansas City Saves a Landmark
|
Completed in 1915, the historic 12th Street Trafficway Viaduct in Kansas City, Missouri is a 2,300 ft long reinforced concrete structure that links the industrial district in the bottom land along the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers to the commercial district along the bluffs 200 ft above.
The viaduct underwent a major restoration program to extend the service life of this vital structure. In 2005, Electrochemical Extraction (ECE) was used to treat the large concrete columns as part of an overall structure rehabilitation. Of these columns, 25 received ECE treatment. These columns typically had elevated chloride levels due to leaking expansion joints in the deck. For complete details, read on.
