Compliance Update
Red Flags Examiner Guidance Is Expected This Fall
As examiners begin to review compliance with identity theft "red-flag" rules and guidelines, they should mark their calendars for November 1 as the deadline to comply with the new requirements. However, help is on the way for those examiners in need of guidance with the new regulations. The National Credit Union Association and the Federal Trade Commission is expected to issue examiner guidance by this fall to aid companies in implementing the new rules, which are designed to detect, prevent and mitigate identity theft.

News From The NCUA
NCUA Grant Funds Still Availalbe
The National Credit Union Association's Community Development Revolving Loan Fund is still accepting applications for the Staff, Official, and Board Member Training Grant Initiative as part of the 2008 Technical Assistance Grants.  To participate, a federally-chartered credit union must be currently designated as a "low-income" credit union, and a state-chartered credit union must have the equivalent low-income designation from the state and concurrence from NCUA.

Eligible credit unions may apply for a maximum of $3,000 for training materials, webinars, or seminars that will help the credit union improve operational efficiency, improve its financial condition, develop management awareness of laws and regulations, provide new services to members or improve upon existing services.

Applications are available on NCUA's Web site, at http://www.ncua.gov/CreditUnionDevelopment/Programs/FinanceGrants.htm.

Save The Date For Economic Forum 2008
Southwest Corporate's 31 annual Economic Forum will return to the popular Westin Galleria Hotel in Texas on October 28-29, following a yearlong renovation. The theme for this year's Economic Forum is, "Looking Beyond the Horizon." It will feature presentations about the implications of a global economy on local credit union markets, the impact of technology on payments, financial institutions and consumers and likely economic scenarios that depend on the outcome of the presidential elections.

Additionally, Joe Pine, the author of Experience Economy and Authenticity, will address topics key to maintaining strong loyalty in an era for growing commoditization and choice. And, of course, Dr. Charles Idol will provide a credit union view of emerging economic conditions. All this and more are in store at this year's Economic Forum.
