Entertaining Economist Slated For Southwest Corporate's Economic Forum
What happens to the U.S. economy following the November 2008 presidential election? Economic issues have taken center stage in the presidential race, with Americans staggered by gasoline prices exceeding $4 per gallon. Barack Obama is campaigning under the slogan, "Blueprint for Change," and John McCain recently had this to say, "No matter which of us wins in November, there will be change in Washington. The question is what kind of change?"

Economic consultant Jeff Thredgold will pose answers to that question at Southwest Corporate Federal Credit Union's 2008 Economic Forum set for Oct. 28-29 at the freshly remodeled Westin Galleria in Dallas.

Deadline Looms For Implementing New ID Theft 'Red Flag' Rules

It is a known fact that identity theft results in billions of dollars in losses each year to individuals and businesses. But the question still lingers, has your credit union implemented the new identity theft "red flag" rules to help protect your credit union and your members against identity theft?

As the 2008 Discovery Conference attendees were reminded last Thursday, your credit union has until Nov. 1, 2008 to implement the new rules as required by the Federal Trade Commission and other federal financial institution regulatory agencies, and to develop prevention measures based on your credit union's own ID theft situation.

Economic Headwinds Call For Investment Diversification
Consumers are curbing discretionary spending in the face of skyrocketing gas prices, a housing slump and a recent spike in unemployment. Reduced purchasing translates into a reduced number of credit union member loans. With credit unions leaning into what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke labeled "headwinds that still face the economy," finding wise investments for surplus liquidity is a challenge.

Earlier this year CUNA estimated lending growth at 1.8 percent and share growth at 4.8 percent, leaving credit unions with high levels of funds to invest in a low-interest-rate environment with rapidly fluctuating spreads. This combination of factors has led credit unions to move their portfolios to the shortest duration thus far this decade.
