 Saturn is known as Shani in Sanskrit. Saturn is the great teacher of cosmic truths. It does that through restrictions, obstructions, frustrations, unhappiness, disillusionment's, setbacks and  deathlike transformations. Saturn is considered the significator of misery in a natal chart. There is a definite purpose of the saturnine restrictions. Through his relentless force, he forces the soul to recognise its inner truth that has become obscured by veils of matter. On the positive side, Saturn stands for achievement, the fruits of hard work, responsibility, democracy and we would not get very far without it.
Saturn is the planet of karmic retribution. It keeps an account of all the past acts and releases this Karma unexpectedly. Faced with such powerful karmic forces an individual has to dig deep into their inner resources. Therefore it is important do balance the energy of Saturn in our birth charts through Upayas or remedial measures. These can be done through Donation, Prayer, Chanting of Sacred mantras and Fasting.
Who needs to Fast
It is generally good for everyone to fast for Saturn as we keep his blessings. If SAturn in in a difficult position in your birth chart or if you are experiences any important Saturn TRansits like Sade Sati, Ashtama Shani or you are in Saturn Dasha or Bhukti, then it is important for you to fast. Libra Moon are about to bein their Sade Sati, Leo Moon are in the last phase of their Sade Sati and Virgo Moon go into their most intense phase of Sade Sati- they must all fast. Aquarius Moon are about to be in Ashtama Shani.
Saturn's 16 Week Fast.
The 16 week fast of Saturn is one of the most important remedial measure for Saturn as the person takes on the task themselves in order to pacify and honour Saturn. Although this fast is done for Saturn, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The day to fast is Saturday for 16 Consecutive Saturdays from 25 July to 7 Nov 2009. The Navagraha Mandapam, or "Nine Planets Pavilion," will overlook the Wailua River. It will be an open-air building, twenty feet square with nine carved granite pillars each measuring 7' 4" high. Along the perimeter is a granite wall where people can sit. In the middle is a raised rasi chakra platform that is twelve feet square and three feet high. The rasi chakra has twelve squares in the South Indian jyotish style, with the zodiac symbols beautifully etched into polished red granite, all of which has been carved in Bangalore. The bronze navagraha, or "Nine Planetary Deities" (pictured at right), that will sit on the rasi chakra have been specially designed with wheels hidden on the bottom so they can be easily moved into the proper zodiac square (they weigh over 150 lbs each), according to the planets' true astronomical positions.
