Tape, Swab, Bulk, or Micro-Vac
I was asked about this last week. Here is a simple
guide for what devices to use when taking source
samples for microbial investigation.
I. Surface
A. Tape (for dry and even surface): non-culturable, non-
quantitative results
- Dry wall, wood surface, etc.
- Ceiling tile (if most of visible biomass are on the top)
B. Swab (for wet or uneven surface): quantitative
results
- Dry wall, wood surface, etc.
- Ceiling tile (if most of visible biomass are on the top)
II. Subsurface (and/or Surface)
A. Bulk
- Air filter: If significant amount of dust is accumulated
on the filter, use micro-vac first and then cut a bulk
piece. Pull filter off metal supporting mesh first before
cutting.
- Ceiling tile: Cut a bulk piece if most of the biomass is
inside of the material and cannot be removed by
swabbing.
- Decayed wood, etc.
B. Micro-vac (for loose biomass)
- Carpet dust, floor dust, etc.
