The "73 million and 3" Year-Old Dinosaur Fossil
|
|
Why Rounding Up Numbers
A guy took his date to a natural history museum and
they saw this T-Rex fossil. In an
attempt to impress his date, this guy told her that this
fossil is 73,000,003 year-old. Being a biology major,
she didn't believe that carbon dating can be this exact.
Of course, she asked politely that how he knows that.
Our guy said with pride that he knows it because that
the museum tour guide told him this exact T-Rex
fossil was 73,000,000 year-old when he visited the
museum 3 years ago.
The rounding rule for significant figure in layman's
term is that when we
add numbers together, the sum needs to be rounded
up to have the same degree of uncertainty as the
number that
has the largest uncertainty. Otherwise, the precision
of the measurement will be misrepresented.
For Example:
73,000,000 + 3 = 73,000,003 -> 73,000,000
73,000,000 + 3,300,000 = 76,300,000 -> 76,000,000
It's the same when adding individual spore
concentrations to come up with the total spore
concentrations.
For Example:
7,300 Asp/Pen + 13 Stachybotrys = 7,313 -> 7,300
7,300 Asp/Pen + 130 Stachybotrys = 7,430 -> 7,400
In fact, it's in AIHA EMLAP Policy that data need to be
rounded up to the proper significant figure to
represent the correct precision. If the labs do not
round it up after adding the numbers together, the
precision is misrepresented. Check your lab reports
to see if you need to call your lab and tell them about
the story about a "73 million and 3" Year-Old Dinosaur
Fossil".

A True Visual Representation of Airborne Mold Spores, MoldSense QGraph
|
|
Look at the "Big Picture"!
What good is a mold report if the homeowner
or
property manager cannot even read it? Many
bar
graphs for airborne fungal spores are not
proportional
to the concentrations of spores, which
makes it
confusing to read, even for scientists-not to
mention
homeowners or facility managers. For
example, the
ratio of bar heights of 1000 to 100 to 10
spore/m3 on a
log scale graph is actually 3 to 2 to 1. It's
good for
scientific research, but it's certainly not
helping when
you try to explain the results to homeowners.
QLab's proprietary and copyrighted
MoldSense
QGraph is "Visually-Representing and
Proportionally-
Correct." Homeowner can see a clear visual
representation of airborne spore profiles in all
samples as illustrated on MoldSense
QGraph. On the
other hand, they cannot understand why your
competitor's report graphs are not even
proportional to
the concentrations reported. Show a copy of
MoldSense QGraph to your prospects, and
you can
easily increase your sales closing rate. Stop
giving your
customers a cloudy mental confusion and
start
providing them a clear visual representation.
