Find Me a Leader! As the summer advances, the recruiting increases. In conversation, by phone call, email, even text, we ask or answer the dreaded question: "Will you serve as a Sunday school teacher, trustee, committee member...?" Developing leaders is a nearly universal challenge for the 21st century church. While some members are overengaged, trying to keep the ministry afloat, others are seemingly disinterested or conflicted over active involvement. The current cultural shifts continue to challenge and often discourage us. We do some hand-wringing, say a little prayer, and try to make it all work out. There is another approach, say the authors of Empowering Laity, Engaging Leaders: Tapping the Root for Ministry. Susan E. Gillies and M. Ingrid Dvirnak examine how Jesus learned to lead--by focusing on potential, self-awareness, communication, and also, by following. In other words, there are specific and practical ways to cultivate leaders. This model may not produce the immediate results we think we need, but it is more effective and long-lasting. The Gillies/Dvirnak book is the most recent volume in Judson's "Living Church" series that addresses the primary felt needs of today's churches. Is leadership a need in your church? What insights do you have about developing leaders? Add your comments to the notes on our Facebook page, or send me an email. We look forward to hearing from you. Laura Alden Publisher, Judson Press |
