Cruelty Citations Filed Against Philadelphia Gun Club

Dear Friends,

The following press statement was released to Philadelphia-area media today:

Humane Society Police Officer Johnna Seeton filed five citations for ill-treatment of animals against the Philadelphia Gun Club (PGC), located at 3051 State Road, in Bensalem, Pennsylvania in Bucks County.

Officer Seeton resides in Harrisburg, and is affiliated with the Pennsylvania Legislative Animal Network (PLAN).

The first citation stems from a live pigeon shoot held at the PGC on March 17, 2012. The other four citations stem from a PGC live pigeon shoot held on March 31, 2012.

Each citation represents a pigeon wounded by people involved with the PGC and retrieved alive by members of SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK). SHARK personnel were in boats on the Delaware River which borders PGC property.

Officer Seeton filed a similar charge against the PGC in 2010, again after a wounded pigeon was retrieved by a member of SHARK who was in a boat.

In the 2010 case, Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler, who publicly scoffed at the cruelty charge, brokered a private arrangement for the PGC to evade the citation by making a small donation to a local humane society. The arrangement was condemned by the humane community, including Humane Officer Seeton and SHARK.

Donkey Tormented for Mindless Entertainment

During a break at a Mexican rodeo at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, IL September 2011, a donkey is brought out and harassed in a repulsive attempt to "entertain" the bored audience. The poor donkey is completely passive and endures the torment without retaliation. SHARK investigators were monitoring the abuse, and now we want to make certain that it never happens again.

SHARK Exposes Ridiculous Rodeo Propaganda

Those who care about animals are often accused of anthropomorphizing animals. This means we attribute human characteristics to animals. I'm not certain that I would disagree. In the nonhuman members of my family I certainly see many of the same emotions and responses to positive and negative stimuli that I exhibit. We act very similarly when we are hungry, happy, are fearful, when we are in pain, etc.

The ProRodeo Sport News is the publication of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Rodeo people often accuse compassionate people of anthropomorphizing. For that reason, I was amused to see this title in the latest edition which broadcast:

"Young Horses Look to Make Names for Themselves"

That is one of the most idiotic things I have ever read. Rodeo thugs claim their horses seek status, when in fact they are merely trying to escape their torment.

Friends of Rodeo (FOR) is an apologist organization that makes excuses for rodeo cruelty. FOR has a logo: "Keeping the Dream Alive."

Indeed, rodeo people do live in a dream. A dream that rodeo is a sport, and in that dream all the dreamers are cowboys.

I guess some people - the weak-minded kind - are just more comfortable avoiding real life than dealing with it.
Thug Beats Pregnant Girlfriend Following Oakdale Rodeo

Violence to Animals Leads to Violence to Humans

The Modesto Bee
newspaper in Modesto, California reports the following event after a rodeo in Oakdale, California on Sunday, April 15:

Scores of rodeogoers stuck in stop-and-go traffic as they left the arena grounds Saturday watched a driver belt his pregnant passenger, then drive and charge at a mounted police officer before being arrested at gunpoint, authorities said.

Police said Julio Cesar Gutierrez, 34, of Manteca faces charges of domestic violence, resisting arrest, misdemeanor assault on a police horse and drunken driving after the incident just outside the arena parking lot. Stanislaus County Jail records show he was in custody without bail on an immigration hold.

This story proves violence begets violence - just like the American Psychiatric Association and the FBI have documented.

"Kindness and compassion towards all living beings is a mark of a civilized society.   Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bullfighting and rodeos are all cut from the same fabric: violence.   Only when we have become nonviolent towards all life will we have learned to live well ourselves."   - Cesar Chavez, civil rights and labor leader, founder of the United Farm Workers
