Keep the Pressure on South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to Stop Cruel Pigeon Shoot
|
|
DEAR FRIENDS,
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a member of the NRA, has not responded to our request for her to shut down the impending four-day live pigeon shoot at the Broxton Bridge Plantation in Ehrhardt, South Carolina. Please keep calling and writing! Don't let the Governor ignore this horrendous cruelty. Remember to always be polite and respectful in your communication.

Keep Pressure on The Price is Right!
|
|
As we told you last week, the TV game show "The Price is Right" recently gave away a trip to the Calgary Stampede Rodeo as a prize. TV legend Bob Barker was appalled and released the following statement to SHARK:
"I am very sorry that The Price is Right producers have chosen to align themselves with an activity that is cruel and violent. Rodeo does not honor western heritage in the US, Canada or anywhere else. Rodeos torment, injure and kill animals. I hope PIR decision makers will immediately reassess their very bad decision."
Please continue to politely write CBS and tell them you too are appalled that they supported and promoted the violent and disgraceful cruelty of the Calgary Stampede Rodeo.

Sexist and Cruel NJ Bear Hunter Forced to Apologize!
|
|
We are pleased to announce that our campaign to force a written apology from NJ bear hunter Mark T. Hall has succeeded!
Here it is. Doris Lin is the lawyer Hall had targeted.

While this is a pretty poor excuse for an apology, the fact that the Big Bad Bear Hunter had to get on his knees and apologize is a major accomplishment.
This is how fast it happened: SHARK, along with the Animal Protection League of New Jersey and the Bear Education and Resource group (BEAR), held a well attended protest in front of Hall's law, Morgan, Melhuish and Abrutyn, last Thursday. On Friday, the New Jersey Law Journal published a fantastic article on the issue. The New Jersey Law Journal is widely read inside the legal community and the Hall protest was the number one story on their website.
We can only imagine what the scene was when the firm's partners read the story on Friday, and saw not only how poorly they and Hall looked, but that SHARK had promised to contact their clients and ask them how they felt about Hall's sexism.
Before the weekend was over, Hall had written his apology. To make sure it got to Doris Lin ASAP, it was put right into her hands on Monday by a delivery service.
We will be writing to the law firm and this is what we'll tell them: While Hall did apologize, which was the stated goal of our campaign, he did not deal with his sexism or his attacks against other women in the BEAR Group.
So, while we will not pursue our campaign further at this time, Hall is under probation. If we catch him making further sexist statements, or if he retracts his apology so not to feel humiliated by other hunters, we will immediately restart our campaign where it left off.
We want to congratulate everyone who participated in this effort. Please understand that all your calls and emails had an effect, and that's why it is important to keep writing and calling Governor Haley and "The Price is Right." When we all work together, we can win.

"Kindness and compassion towards all living beings is a mark of a civilized society. Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bullfighting and rodeos are all cut from the same fabric: violence. Only when we have become nonviolent towards all life will we have learned to live well ourselves." - Cesar Chavez, civil rights and labor leader, founder of the United Farm Workers
