Issue: # 13 January/2010
Greetings!

Happy New Year! It is exciting to be back at work and focusing on the Green Capital Alliance. Much of my time in November and December was spent on grant proposals to advance our efforts in 2010-we should find out soon if the requests are approved and I'll be eager to share any good news!

This e-newsletter highlights two projects that offer some of the details about how our region is focusing on retrofitting homes to become more energy efficient.  These efforts go far beyond simple energy savings because they engage dislocated workers in making the improvements happen, and target cost-savings weatherization measures on homes of low income residents. That is the kind of work we can all be proud of in 2010.

Be well, Kristine

Retrofit Training Provides Next Chance For People Needing Opportunities

retrofit workers

Twin Rivers Unified School District Adult Education is about to launch a one-of-a-kind "Green Building Deep Energy Retrofit Apprentice" program, taught by local expert Tim Butts.  These classes target dislocated workers who have been recruited from the Sacramento One Stop career centers, parolees, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) workers. The adult education student workers will be paid an apprenticeship living wage, and will participate in 960 hours of field and classroom instruction for the duration of the six month term. Students will have job offers from employment partners when they graduate, providing them with an opportunity to complete the two-year Building Maintenance Repairer apprenticeship program.

Weatherization Program Helps Neediest Households
Breathe clean air awardsThe Community Resource Project (CRP) will be retrofitting 2,000 homes of low income residents in the Sacramento area, through the stimulus-funded Weatherization Assistance Program. Free weatherization services are available to improve the energy efficiency of homes for property owners and renters who meet the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program income guidelines.

Services include measures such as attic insulation, caulking, heating/cooling system repair, and other energy conservation investments. The Weatherization Assistance Program provides a new business opportunity for local subcontractors and building supply vendors, and CRP is eager to solicit broader involvement. The Subcontractors' and Vendors' Fair on February 10th (details in the Events section above) will teach interested companies about the program and how to submit bids and proposals.
