Greener solution to electronic waste creates new
opportunities for former foster youth students
|
The City of Roseville, Refurb World, United
Auburn Indian Community and the Sierra College Foundation partnered to provide 50
recycled personal computers to former foster youth community college
students and other students receiving financial assistance in a ceremony held
on August 28th. Each student also received a care package
containing school supplies, basic hygiene needs and other necessities.
The personal computers were donated by
the City of Roseville,
Refurb World, United Auburn Indian Community and the Sierra College Foundation.
"This is a great opportunity to reuse
perfectly good computers that were destined to be destroyed in a way that can
make a big difference for these students," said Mayor Gina Garbolino. "We were pleased to be able to work with
RefurbWorld, a Roseville
business, the United Auburn Indian Community and the Sierra College Foundation
to make this special event happen."
"With computers a necessity these days to attend college, this giveaway breaks
down the financial barriers to access technology that these students would have
normally faced," said Sonbol Aliabadi, Executive Director of the Sierra College
Foundation.
Refurb World, the e-commerce division of
Tech-Ed Networks is a technology company based in Roseville and donated many of the PC's and
set up the computers for the students. "We rallied our employees around
this very special project," said Steve Fassler, CEO of Refurb World. "It
was a great way to give back to the community.

Local Business: Octus Energy
|
|
With cutting-edge energy efficient technologies from our
region entering the clean energy market, smart energy is primed to get a lot
smarter. And lucrative.
Octus Energy (OTCBB: OCTI), a public company in Davis, California, is cultivating a unique solution for businesses, schools
and government agencies to generate substantial energy savings. The Octus
Smart Energy Platform (OctusSEP) is a comprehensive energy management
system combining an IP communication platform, web-based software and
energy-efficient sensors and controls. OctusSEP targets 40-60% energy savings by networking
these specialized sensors, controls and high-performance retrofit fixtures to automate
the management of lighting, HVAC and other electrical devices.
Public and private organizations in the U.S. spend
approximately $100 billion each year to cool and light their facilities.
Available technologies can conservatively shave $30 billion per year in energy
costs; this is where Octus is acutely focused.
Octus's approach to energy efficiency is smart, as is their
strategy to leverage the Capital Region's strengths. Octus is collaborating
with two University of California, Davis research centers, the California
Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) and the Western Cooling Efficiency Center
(WCEC), to commercialize OctusSEP. In addition, the company is managed by a
senior team of regional energy and technology executives, and is directed by an
Advisory Group composed of world-class energy and financial professionals.
"This
is what we do: Work with forward-thinking, innovative companies to conceive,
create and commercialize next-generation lighting solutions," explains Michael
Siminovitch, Director of the CLTC, "Octus Energy's comprehensive approach to
energy efficiency - including system design, project financing, automated
controls and energy management - is what the industry needs. We look forward to
helping the company fuse and catalyze OctusSEP."
Octus
recently announced it secured an exclusive worldwide license from the University of
California for its wicking evaporative AC technology ("Wickool"), which
was developed by the WCEC and eminated from the UC Davis Graduate School of Management's
Center for Entrepreneurship. Wickool is being commercially tested by WCEC
at a regional Target Corp. retail store as a retrofit to rooftop HVAC units.
Octus Energy's collaborative approach to commercializing
energy efficiency solutions from our area's leading research centers has a
double bottom line: do good (generate environmental benefits) and make money
(create jobs and wealth). "The Sacramento region has the best people,
technology, and networks; the ground is fertile, and it's time to grow and
harvest," said Octus CEO Chris Soderquist. "We are fortunate to be at the
center of what's happening, and it's not a matter of if, but when and by whom,
the region will blossom as a clean energy hotbed."
