It's a new year and time to look ahead at what the new Obama Administration has plans for in the air quality realm. Doris Matsui (invited) on Feb. 17 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Sacramento Area Council of Governments Board Room, 1415 L Street in Sacramento. Seating is limited. 4 Hearings ahead for new 8-Hour Ozone Standard Sac Air District logo

The air districts within the Sacramento Federal Nonattainment Area will hold public hearings to consider adoption of the Sacramento Regional 8-Hour Ozone Attainment and Reasonable Further Progress Plan (Plan). In addition to the Plan adoption, the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District will consider certification of the Plan's Environmental Impact Report. The Plan covers all of Sacramento and Yolo counties, and portions of Placer, El Dorado, Solano, and Sutter counties.

According to the Sacramento Air District, the Plan shows that the region is meeting requirements of the Clean Air Act for the 1997 8-hour ozone standard.  The Plan also will update the emission inventory and establish new emission budgets for transportation and general conformity. In addition, the plan makes commitments to adopt and implement new reasonably available control measures.

The Boards of Directors in the nonattainment area will consider the adoption of the Plan during public hearings set out below:
Monday, Feb. 2, at 4 p.m. at the Yuba County Government Center in Marysville.

Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. at the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors in Placerville.

Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 9 a.m. at the Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District in Davis.

Thursday, Feb. 19, at 2:30 p.m. at the Placer County Board of Supervisors in Auburn.

New landmark Breathe California air quality study underway
January 5, 2009 an important new air quality study got underway Highwaywith the placement of 8 DRUM Samplers at five sites along California's Central Valley, in Redding, Chico, Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield.  This landmark study, sponsored by Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails (BCSET) under the volunteer leadership of Dr. Thomas A. Cahill, PhD, University of California, Davis, will record levels of pollutants along the Valley in 8 size modes, including ultra fine particulates, which, if inhaled, can enter the blood stream and travel to the heart and brain.

Part of an ongoing effort by BCSET to better understand the nature of particulate air pollution in our region, this pioneer study marks the first research effort ever to simultaneously capture levels of ultrafine particulate pollution along the entire California Central Valley.
