| SUTTER HEALTH GOES GREEN! |
One of our region's biggest employers-Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region-which operates hospitals in Yolo, Sacramento, and Placer counties, aims to get green! In addition to its current efforts to promote ridesharing and carpooling among its employees, Sutter is rolling out a new program that focuses on four R's: reducing, reusing, recycling, and reaching out. To recycle and reuse previously discarded medical supplies, Sutter is partnering with Ascent Healthcare Solutions to reprocess medical products that can then be used safely, eliminating tons of needless waste from landfills. Sutter is also working with MedShare International to efficiently recover surplus supplies that would have been destined for the dump and redistribute them to doctors in developing countries. These programs highlight Sutter's commitment to improving healthcare and the environment by increasing efficiency. And by promoting these four R's at the workplace, Sutter also hopes their thousands of patients and workers will take these green habits and practices home.

| SACRAMENTO SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PROGRAM |
With so much out there about "going green" it can be hard for a business to know where to start. The Sacramento Sustainable Business Program makes the whole process easier by guiding businesses and public agencies as they take steps toward sustainability. The voluntary program, staffed by the Business Environmental Resource Center (BERC), has varying options and degrees of participation to appeal to beginners and those that have been taking environmental action for years. Those in the program can comply with any or all of the five categories of sustainability outlined by BERC: Energy Conservation, Water Conservation, Pollution Prevention, Solid Waste Reduction, and Green Building. Each category has a checklist with suggested measures and practices from which participants can choose those that work best for their businesses. To acknowledge participants' achievements and to allow consumers to choose sustainable businesses, the program awards participants with a placard to put on display. On September 18th, the Sacramento Sustainable Business Program held its annual awards ceremony at the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) building to recognize outstanding achievers in the program. The 2008 award winners include the following regional businesses: Dos Coyotes Border Café, EDAW, Federico Beauty Institute, Glumac, Kikkoman Foods, Inc., Raley's Distribution Center, Sacramento County Department of Facility Planning, Architecture, and Real Estate, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Seimens Building Technologies, SolarCity, State of California Franchise Tax Board, and the State of California Department of General Services. |
