THE SACRAMENTO GREEN PARTNERSHIP MEASURES COMMUNITY-WIDE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
|
|
The Sacramento Green Partnership, funded in part by SMUD and the
Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District, is bringing together
the jurisdictions in Sacramento County to measure their baseline green house
gas (GHG) emissions inventory. Instead of working in isolation, the climate
coordinators from each jurisdiction are working together to develop a
consistent, collaborative approach to measuring GHG emissions across each city
and the county. The process is using the International Council for Local
Environmental Initiatives' (ICLEI's) local government protocol for inventorying
GHGs. The jurisdictions are currently trying to finish the data collection
process and the numbers should be crunched shortly. The Sacramento Green
Partnership is proactively addressing AB 32 and laying the groundwork for their
next big step-to create and launch Climate Action Plans.

SACRAMENTO STATE IS HELPING OUR REGION TO LEAD THE WAY IN SUSTAINABILITY
|
|
The campus itself is going green, with all new construction
being built to obtain LEED certification. The Sac State Tram Project will
provide a loop around the campus which will provide a much-needed link to
Regional Transit at 65th Street. In addition to these efforts,
Sacramento State's Center for Clean Energy is focusing on developing, testing
and helping bring to market a variety of alternative and renewable energy
technologies with a focus on Smart Grid technologies. "Smart Grid" refers to improving the current power grid with new computing technology to make the system more efficient and reliable, saving money and reducing emissions. Sacramento State is
also home to one of only two power engineering programs in the state. This
program trains students to work in the utility industry and it serves as a
critical supplier of engineers hired by regional energy companies such as SMUD
and PG&E.
