Social Host Ordinances - Indiana Update

Project RAD visited with Intersect's Wendy Cook in Madison County recently to shoot a video story on the state's first social host ordinance. Cook's goal is to get the ordinance passed in most of the cities and towns in her county.

Social host ordinances are relatively new in Indiana, though the governor of California just signed a state law putting social host ordinances into effect. The concept is to hold adults as ultimately responsible for hosting underage drinking parties or providing alcohol to underage youth.

In Pendleton, we also visited with Police Chief Mark Farrer and Russell Kischuck, a 17-year-old Pendleton Heights High School student. The same day we visited - a Monday - a local high school student was arrested for being drunk at 8:30 a.m. Cook said a recent survey indicated that children as young as 12 were taking their first drink of alcohol in Madison County.

Watch for the video to be posted soon.

Blocking Alcohol Content Online - Parental Controls

Many parents may be unaware they can block online content even if their children use mobile devices like air cards or USB modems.

Here's a message we received using a demo MiFi unit from Verizon Wireless when trying to tap the website that is promoting expanded alcohol sales in Indiana:

This site is filtered by Verizon Wireless Content Filters

The account holder for your Verizon Wireless account has set age-appropriate content filters on this device restricting access to this content. Only the account holder has authorization to change this filter. If you are the account holder and wish to modify these restrictions, please login to the "Parental Control" section of verizonwireless.com/parentalcontrols. Click the "Change Settings" and login to make adjustments.

A reminder that content is often in the control of parents and they should ask when purchasing cell phones or other wireless devices that allow Internet access. Same for TV, cable, and other high-tech devices.

Content for adults is not always appropriate for 12-year-olds who need to jump online and do research for homework assignments.
