One Woman's Story: When Alcohol is too Accessible | |
In a small church office in the heart of Lawrence, we spoke with a secretary this week whose 38-year-old niece is struggling with her addiction to alcohol. As we spoke of our recent "Meeting of the Minds" project completed for Project RAD, we were torn to hear her story.
The niece had been doing well, and the job search was underway. One evening she decided to treat her aunt and uncle to dinner and headed to the local grocery store. There, she encountered the wine aisle. She went back and forth; from produce to the wine, from dairy back to the wine. The call was unfortunately too strong and the woman suffered a relapse. She was unable to resist the urge "at that weak moment," as her aunt recalled. Too accessible, too available and too tempting. At our meeting this past week of government officials, liquor store owners, addictions specialists, Drug Free groups, neighborhood organizers and faith-based agencies, we had one idea and one goal: open dialogue. Candor is never easy. Agreement often elusive. But in two hours on this Thursday morning in a local parks community room, real people with real voices and real stories were shared. Watch for a series of "Meeting of the Minds" around the state and updates from Project RAD. Our call to action will be assembled, shared and pushed out for review when we've continued our dialogue in different parts of Indiana. In our survey of those who attended, the majority responded they would help us plan a local or regional "Meeting of Minds." One of our upcoming topics: Public Engagement. |
| Virgin Mimosas on Burger King B'fast Menu | |
Burger King's competition with McDonalds has turned into a new low light by offering a "virgin" mimosa on its breakfast menu. The new brunch menu is debuting in test markets that include Massachusetts, Florida and parts of Canada. BK's mimosa is nonalcoholic, with OJ and Sprite instead of orange juice and champagne. But the potential payday from breakfast diners is worth another shot on Burger King's part. According to data from The NPD Group/CREST, breakfast sales at fast-food joints have resisted the erosion seen in lunch and dinner sales due to the recession. And now one more place children can learn parental habits of drinking by asking mommy and daddy for a mimosa at breakfast. |
