Did you Know?
The Center for Alcohol Policy does surveys of American attitudes about alcohol regulation. Here are some bullets from its Web site:
  • 70 percent support the right of individual states to set their own laws and regulations surrounding the sale of alcohol
  • 89 percent agree that state and local laws regarding alcohol regulations should be decided by lawmakers and citizens - not judges
  • 96 percent support laws and regulations that are proven to reduce the number of drunk driving fatalities and prevent underage drinking
  • More than 85 percent believe that beer, wine and liquor should NOT be sold online
San Francisco Residents Fighting Walgreens Expansion into Alcohol Sales
According to Wine & Spirits Daily: Walgreens is in talks with San Francisco city officials to sell wine and beer in 34 of its 64 locations amid concerns that it could hurt certain neighborhoods and small businesses. Approximately two-thirds of those 34 stores are in high crime areas with an already high concentration of stores that sell alcohol. San Francisco recently made it illegal for chain drugstores to sell tobacco items. Walgreens sued the city over the ban and lost. An appeal is pending. A local law requires new licensees to acquire a permit from a business already selling alcohol to help prevent over-consumption.

Indiana Senator Says: Not so Fast ...
An attempt to broadly amend the Sunday expansion of alcohol sales into a bill failed in the Indiana General Assembly this past week - and Sen. Ron Alting was true to his word in stopping that maneuver. Alting, a member of the summer study committee that heard testimony for two years from nearly 100 people, said he would not support a widespread expansion of Sunday alcohol sales and open up the floodgates to retailers. The second reading amendment offered to that bill for promoting Hoosier microbreweries did not get called in the Senate thanks to Sen. Alting, who is based in Lafayette.
