In 10th grade, there was a boy named Brian Tolley. His parents were hippies and drove an old Volkswagon van. It was from him that I first heard about things like The Grateful Dead and marijuana. He was cool. The only thing I didn't like was his seemingly endless array of hemp ponchos. If being a hipster meant wearing itchy, frankly quite ugly, garments ... well, I would just stick with my Benetton outfits and take my chances on being allied with "the man."

Fast forward twenty years and tree-hugging has transformed from an alternative lifestyle to mainstream and Main Street. My super favorite hoodie is 90% soybean, 10% cashmere and cost
about $30 at Putamayo in Charleston, South Carolina.

Have you joined the green revolution yet? My new favorite way to get in on the act is to give Sprout Kids Clothing for baby gifts.
Sprout baby and children's clothes are made with 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton. They're machine washable and made to last. In the long run, bamboo clothing is biodegradable, too. Isnt that cool? Allergy-conscious moms take note that Sprout uses low impact dyes and all of their bamboo t-shirts and bamboo baby and children's clothes are made of unbleached bamboo and unbleached organic cotton, which is gentle on sensitive skin. Another ingenius feature is that they use silk screening on all the insides of baby clothes, so little ones don't get scratched by tags!  It's a smart company and a smart line of products, so both yuppies and hippies can shop together in peace!
