SIGNS OF ECONOMIC RECOVERY
 | |
Richard Kalish Chair of the Board |
Signs of economic recovery in San Rafael are encouraging. Each quarter, the City receives an analysis of sales tax revenue generated in San Rafael, comparing sales tax receipts with the comparable period in the preceding year. The most recent report (available on the Chamber website here), comparing sales tax receipts in the 3rd Quarter 2011 with the 3rd Quarter 2012, contains some very promising results, including the fact that overall the City received 6.2% more sales tax revenue in the 3rd Quarter 2011 than in the same period a year earlier.
Particularly encouraging is that topping the list were contractors (25.7% increase) and restaurants (38.4% increase not including alcohol sales). The increase in business among contractors is not only welcome news for the local construction industry which was hit particularly hard by the recession. Spending on construction can be an advance indicator of increased economic activity ahead as businesses expecting greater sales invest in the infrastructure necessary to service more business.
Greater spending at local restaurants is of course is good for the restaurants, but also suggests a greater level of confidence among customers that their economic lives are back on track and will be sustained by future economic growth and stability. Since "a rising tide raises all boats," this is good news for everyone.
We at the Chamber want to know your ideas and concerns. Please share them with me at rkalish@knblaw.com or call me at 415-482-2180.
