Green Committee Promotes Certification
| |
Do your part! Buy from Green Businesses and you help protect our environment and support responsible business practices.
|
One of our committee's chief goals this year is to help fellow Chamber members become more environmentally aware and to participate in the Marin County Green Business certification program.
Part of a Bay Area-wide certification effort, the designation distinguishes businesses that protect, preserve and sustain our environment.
The business case for certification Participating in the Green Business program helps companies and organizations identify opportunities to save money, enhance work quality, improve employee health and safety, and reduce liabilities. The program also provides benefits such as increased employee retention, marketing advantage, and potential for press and other public relations coverage.

Trash and Recycling Tips for Green Business Certification By Devi Peri, Education Coordinator, Marin Sanitary Service
You can get your organization certified as a Marin County Green Business by adopting measures for waste reduction, energy and water conservation, as well as pollution prevention.
This time, we'll give you an overview of requirements and suggestions for reduction of waste and improved recycling practices. The numbered items are mandatory and the bulleted ones are additional ways you can choose to meet the required number of measures in each area.
Reduce waste
- Eliminate all single-use plastic water bottles
- Set all copiers and printers on duplex printing if they have that capability
- Eliminate the use of all polystyrene, such as Styrofoam, in beverage and foodware
- Stop using disposable plastic bags (exceptions for meat and produce bags)
Choose from additional measures like these:
- In the lunchroom, replace all disposables with permanent ware (e.g. mugs, dishes, utensils) and refillable condiment containers
- Reduce junk mail. Go to the Stop Junk Mail site for tips
Reuse materials
- Look in your garbage dumpster regularly and remove any items that could be reused by you or someone else (or recycled)
Other suggested measures:
- Print on the back side of previously printed paper whenever appropriate, and keep a stack next to the printer for handy loading
- Reuse garbage bag liners or eliminate where not needed
- Donate furniture, supplies, scrap materials, etc., to local organizations or schools
Recycle materials
- Recycle all newspapers, office/mixed paper, junk mail, glass bottles and jars, metal cans and foil, plastic bottles and containers
- Provide recycling containers at convenient and appropriate locations
Additional suggested measures:
- Compost food waste and landscape trimmings
Use recycled content materials
- Use recycled copier/printer paper with at least 30% post-consumer waste
Other suggested measures:
- Purchase folders, business cards and all office paper products with the highest recycled content available
- Purchase restroom paper products with recycled content

Stop Litter, It's in Your Hands
By Andree Jansheski, Bellam Self Storage
Did you know that each year our San Rafael Public Works crews spend an estimated $ 325,000 in time and money on litter removal?
And the hazards of litter aren't just financial - they include pollution in surrounding waterways, danger to wildlife, broken glass, disease transmission, etc. Litter is a blight on our community. Litter also causes customers to think twice before patronizing a business or business corridor.
The litter solution We can get involved in the solution to the litter problem. The 2012 San Rafael business license renewals are in the mail. When you renew your license, remember, all businesses in San Rafael are required by law to do the following:
- Keep trash in enclosed receptacles
- Keep parking lots and other areas cleaned
- Prevent litter in any form, including cigarette butts
- Make sure all pollutants are captured and do NOT enter storm drains
Non-compliance can result in fines, but this is really about our responsibility as community members and a larger commitment to our beautiful city. Take this opportunity to join San Rafael Clean and stand up and be recognized with over 140 other San Rafael businesses that have joined the Clean Campaign!
Join the clean campaign
Take the short Litter Pledge now at SanRafaelClean.org. You'll get your logo and link on the site, window decals for your business, and opportunities to be included in San Rafael Clean ads.
As clean campaign participants, we can pick it up, educate our customers and business contacts, and engage in eco-friendly practices.
So look outside your business daily and keep the areas surrounding your property litter free. It doesn't cost anything to keep it litter free. It's good for business, benefits everyone and it sets a great example. And shouldn't that be the bottom line?

Update: Banning Plastic Bags
By Bob Brown, Community Development Director, Retired, City of San Rafael

Marin County's plastic bag ban ordinance became effective on January 1, and other cities in Marin are considering similar regulations.
A Single-Use Plastics Advisory Committee was established last year by six Marin jurisdictions - San Rafael, Novato, San Anselmo, Tiburon, Mill Valley and Sausalito. The committee explored ways to reduce the number of single-use carryout bags and take-out food containers that end up in the landfill or as litter.
570 disposable bags per Marinite, every year
Each year retailers in Marin hand out approximately 143 million single-use carryout bags - 128 million plastic and 15 million paper. That's about 570 bags for every adult and child in the county.
The Advisory Committee recommended that all Marin cities adopt a carryout bag ban ordinance similar to the County's, to create a level playing field for merchants and clarity for customers.
Grocery stores and pharmacies affected The County's ordinance precludes groceries and pharmacies from giving away free carryout bags. Customers can purchase recycled content paper bags for a minimum of five cents to compensate retailers for the higher cost of paper bags. Plastic bags for produce and meat are still allowed. The County's ordinance has met with few objections, but there has been confusion among customers and even some retailers over which stores are subject to the new regulations. In July 2011, the San Rafael City Council directed staff to prepare a bag ban ordinance for consideration, but this action has been delayed due to concerns over potential litigation by the plastics industry.
The Chamber Board has received an initial briefing on the proposed ordinance, and will consider taking a position when the issue is brought forward by the City.
