Enhancing the Business Community for the Good of All
First, I would like to thank Laura Bertolli for assuming the Board Chair position for me during my campaign for Mayor of the City of San Rafael. I know each of the Board Members agree that Laura did an outstanding job as Chair and certainly represented the Chamber in the best of light.
Also, I would like to thank the Board members for allowing me to take a leave of absence during the campaign period. Without this consideration, I know it would not have been possible to run a successful campaign.
I took away from the campaign a number of impressions, but one in particular that I would like to pass on to you and other members of our business community. You may have noticed, as I did, that all mayoral and city council candidates emphasized the need for a healthy local economy and they all seemed to understand the relationship between a healthy business environment and the financial ability of the City to provide needed and expected public services. So, as members of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, we should be proud of the contribution our businesses make to our community -- and feel comfortable others in our community recognize the significant role indirectly, each of our businesses play in making our city vibrant, safe and a desirable place to live and work.
As mayor, I look forward to bringing together the various business groups including the Chamber, the Business Improvement District and other members of our business community, including the shop local groups, to collectively assemble our best ideas and actions to further promote our San Rafael businesses. In this way, we can further enhance our business community for the betterment of all that work and live in San Rafael.
Finally, I am appreciative of the support the Chamber members provided during our campaign -- thanks everyone. Happy Holidays!
Gary Phillips
Board Chairman, San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, Jan-June 2011
