From day one, Batteries Plus built environmentalism into their store, with green measures like low-VOC paints and energy-efficient lighting.
Owner Bill Perin and his staff help customers create less waste and extend the life of cell phones, cameras, laptop computers, cordless drills and other appliances by finding the right replacement batteries.
Because batteries contain hazardous heavy metals, Batteries Plus offers no-charge, year-round battery recycling services. The store accepts used batteries during store hours and provides an after-hours drop box, as well. They offer pick-up service for many commercial customers, from local school districts to Skywalker Ranch.

Reducing Paper Waste Saving Trees, Water and Dollars
Our country is one of the largest consumers of paper
 | MSS staff sorts paper for recycling
|
in the world, at more than 748 pounds per person annually. The average American office worker uses more than 10,000 sheets of printing and copying paper each year. Harvesting and processing trees for paper production, and disposing of paper waste by incineration or landfill have high environmental and financial costs. So reducing paper usage in your office, and making sure it all gets recycled, has substantial benefits. Here's how to get started. How to Reduce and Reuse - Remind staff to use both sides of every sheet with reminder signs beside printers and photocopiers.
- Label a Reuse tray next to all machines and collect paper that can be used again.
- Set up your fax so it won't produce unwanted reports. Use fewer printed messages and more e-mail.
- Use lighter-weight paper where possible - less energy and material are used in its manufacture.
- Stock the kitchen with washable mugs, plates and utensils to discourage the use of paper and plastic disposables.
- Encourage employees who carry lunches to use reusable bags and napkins.
Ways to Increase Recycling- Train all employees how to recycle paper and place easily accessible bins by each printer and photocopier.
- Post signs in centralized areas and next to recycling bins that show staff what can and cannot be recycled.
- Instruct all custodians on how to properly collect paper and cardboard for curbside collection.
- Shift heavy cardboard out of garbage bins and into recycling, which often reduces your disposal costs.
- Pack shredded material in taped paper bags or use Marin Sanitary Service's shredding service that goes straight to recycling.
Remember, a sound paper policy is built on three basic principles -- using less, recycling and buying environmentally preferable paper (chlorine-free and with as much recycled content as possible). Your actions make a difference -- in the environment and in your bottom line. Find out more about the benefits of increased recycling with a free consultation from Marin Sanitary. |

Reduce, Recycle and Re-use in Building Projects
As an architect here in San Rafael, I am in the habit of incorporating sustainable design practices into client projects. We use forms of passive environmental design such as natural control of heat gain and loss and careful site selection, as well as incorporating innovative new materials and technologically advanced systems.
 | | Green materials used at City of Fremont Fire Dept. |
In our office building designs, for example, we create comfortable, healthy work places, reduce energy consumption and improve indoor air quality by reducing product off-gassing. Materials are selected based on questions of environment, regionalism and transport distance as well as user needs, initial costs and life-cycle savings.
Here are some sustainable products you can choose for your office build-out or remodel:
- Rapidly renewable materials, such as bamboo veneer for cabinetry or linoleum flooring
- Recycled content, such as rubber flooring and composite countertops
- Low-emitting materials, including paint and coating products, carpet or carpet squares and adhesive and sealant products
- Salvaged or refurbished components saved during demolition, where possible
By now, most of us have incorporated some level of recycling into our life -- made easier by a local waste management program that does most of the heavy lifting. But recycling is just the starting point for the three-pronged exhortation to "reduce, recycle and re-use."
Can we learn to avoid the materials, containers and products that are not recyclable, whether we are a manufacturer, builder or consumer? Sometimes the answers are very simple. I see some local restaurants now encouraging patrons to bring their own containers for leftovers, as a way to bypass the whole issue of using Styrofoam or plastics.
In the bigger picture, the challenge for all of us in our business community is to incorporate sustainable practices into our lifestyle, at work and at home. This means being aware enough of our environment and our impacts to consciously change our deeply ingrained habits.

A Clean Business is Good Business
by Rosella Rhine, City of San Rafael
According to the book The Cultural Creatives: How Fifty Million People Are Changing the World, more than 70% of the world's population believe something must be done about the environmental dangers facing our planet. Many in the San Rafael business community have already started, by joining the San Rafael Clean Campaign and taking its Business Partner Pledge. Studies show that environmentally focused initiatives and corporate social responsibility programs like this not only enhance a business's image, but also improve employee morale and decrease turnover. The Pledge is a simple way for businesses to demonstrate their commitment to a clean environment and increase customer satisfaction. Andree Jansheski of Bellam Self Storage and Boxes, a San Rafael Clean Business Partner, says, "My customers have told me they appreciate the clean, tidy appearance of my property, which I feel keeps them coming back." By taking the Pledge, more than 127 local businesses have committed themselves to: - pick up debris from their areas
- offer adequate trash and recycling bins
- educate their employees
- follow all city codes
- acknowledge their participation as a Clean Business to their employees and customers
San Rafael Clean has found that avoiding grandiose plans and starting with small efforts are keys to success. For example, by simply putting a trash can outside the front door, customers and passersby have a place to stash their trash. Placing a cigarette receptacle outside the employee entrance reduces cigarette butts on the ground. San Rafael businesses have made tremendous strides in demonstrating their commitment to the world around them, while presenting more inviting storefronts to potential customers. Get more information or sign up (no fee to join!) at www.SanRafaelClean.org.
