Letter from Rick Wells, President/CEO

Happy New Year!
I hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season.For me, it certainly was eventful.After nearly seven years as the CEO of the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce, I spent the last part of December helping ensure a smooth Rick Wellsleadership transition in Vallejo. During the same time I was able to meet with several people from the San Rafael Chamber.While this week marks the official beginning of my tenure here, in December I actually was able to spend some time with both the 2009 and 2010 Officers of the Chamber Board of Directors, the Chamber staff, and some key folks at the City.As you might imagine, this first week here is already packed with meetings, calls and conferences, including my first BIC (Business Issues Committee) meeting on Friday morning.The BIC is a monthly meeting where senior City officials, the Chamber's Executive Committee, and representatives from the Downtown Business Improvement District meet to exchange important information related to the vitality of our business community.

I am excited to join the Chamber staff and Board in our work of serving Chamber members, local businesses and the entire community in San Rafael and Marin County.As you may know, 2010 will actually be the 90th year of the San Rafael Chamber serving as an integral part of this vital community, and I am honored to lead your Chamber as we begin a new decade.One of my priorities for this year will be to get out into the community and visit with as many of our members as I possibly can. To give me a "head start", I hope you will be able to join us at the January 20 Mixer at the Bank of Marin on Fourth Street. Further on in this newsletter is more information about this member to member networking event.

I trust that you saw the Chamber ads in the Marin IJ during December. If you missed them, here are the links, should you care to review them.  You'll see that they included a listing of our Board members, and dates for key 2010 events (click here); a special thanks to our members (click here); a piece featuring pictures and quotes from four Board and/or committee members (click here); and a promo for the "Shop San Rafael" campaign that we discussed in the December newsletter (click here).

It is no secret that 2009 was a very trying time for most of us, and 2010 looks like it also will present its share of challenges. At times like these, Chambers must strive even harder to bring investment value to their members. I want you to know that as I begin my tenure here, I pledge to do my very best to help your Chamber provide you a reasonable return on your membership investment by achieving these primary objectives:
  •          Creating a strong local economy;
  •          Promoting the community;
  •          Providing business connections;
  •          Representing the interests of business to government; and
  •          Influencing political action.
I look forward to meeting you and learning more about the variety of businesses and services you offer to our community. At any time, please feel free to contact me at rwells@sanrafaelchamber.com or (415) 454-4163 with questions or feedback. Responding to your concerns is a top priority for me.

Again, I thank you for inviting me to be part of such a dynamic, vibrant, and beautiful community, and best wishes for a prosperous 2010.

Members Reveal Positive ROI

The Chamber: A Mutual Benefit Community
According to Barrett Schaefer, attorney at DeMartini & Walker LLP,Schaefer
"For me, the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce means community for the benefit of business. It is a place where local businesses -- from one-person businesses to multinational companies with local offices -- can come together for mutual benefit. Being part of the Chamber means 'plugging into' a network of people with different specialties right there ready to go to fulfill the needs of our local community.  Being part of the Chamber means knowing I have a network of people with whom I have familiarity, and for whom I can both provide my own services and also give business. As a Chamber member, I add value to my clients because of my familiarity with the Chamber and my knowledge about the resources it can provide for them."

Schaefer generously gives his time to the Chamber as an Ambassador. He has been chosen Ambassador of the Year for 2009. Congratulations, Barrett!

Bank of Marin Celebrates 20 Years of Commitment

Employees at Bank of Marin are excited about celebrating their 20th anniversary on January 23, 2010. For the entire week of January 18, all branches will be celebrating with goodies and gifts to give out. You're welcome to stop by any of their 13 branches for a free gift!

Joan Capurro, Director of Community Relations for Bank of Marin, has been an active participant in the San Rafael Chamber for 26 years. She was also Bank of Marin's first Branch Manager in San Rafael 20 years ago and claims she always encouraged her customers to belong to the Chamber. In the mid-1990s Joan began discussions with the Chamber to honor local businesses and individuals devoted to helping their community, which became known as "The Spirit of Marin".

The Chamber is fortunate that Bank of Marin's Regional Manager, Michael Kadel, will take over as Board Chairman in 2010. Kadel has served on the Board for two years as Chairman of the Technology Committee and as a member of the Search Committee prior to his appointment as Chairman.

Bank of Marin takes pride in its many community awards and financial distinctions. It is equally proud of its customers, who are some of the most highly respected companies and non-profits in the community.

A few of its recent awards include being chosen as a "2009 Sm-All Stars" by Sandler O'Neill + Partners L.P., which identifies the 30 top performing small-cap banks and thrifts in the nation. The bank has also received a superior 5 Star BauerFinancial rating for 42 consecutive quarters and has been on its recommended list for 71 quarters in a row.

Since 2003 Bank of Marin has been named one of the top 50 corporate philanthropists in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Business Times. And Joan and Mike will agree that perhaps they are proudest of being named a "Best Place to Work" in 2009 by the San Francisco Business Times and the North Bay Business Journal.

State Business News

Calchamber EAC Finds Downturn in State Economy Slowing
California's economy continued to weaken during the past quarter; but the downturn has slowed, according to a quarterly report from the California Chamber of Commerce Economic Advisory Council (EAC).

Many economic statistics for the nation turned sideways or up during the past summer months, a definite improvement over the dismal reports of last winter and spring. Consumer spending, exports, residential investment, and government spending all increased.

Other economic news has been mixed. Nonfarm payroll employment across the nation has declined every month since December 2007. Job counts have fallen most rapidly in construction, manufacturing and professional and business services, especially temporary help services. These three sectors together accounted for 70 percent of the drop-off in total employment.

Concerns about this recession have lessened in recent months, as incoming monthly information turned from negative to mixed and sometimes positive. To read more click here.

Manpower, in partnership with Integrated Community Services, Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties, and Pat Franklyn Associates, Inc., has been awarded a $1.8 million grant through Marin Works Now!, a local initiative federally funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and delivered through the California Department of Social Services. The program is sponsored by CalWORKs Employment Services and seeks to provide an immediate source of income for low-income families, by helping unemployed participants gain work experience, develop skills, and move toward self-sufficiency. This program is a shining example of federal stimulus funds at work, and creates a true win-win situation: participants receive much needed work, job skills, and training; while employers benefit from no-cost labor and potential tax credits. Employers that wish to take advantage of this opportunity for no-cost labor should contact Donna Lemmon/Lisa Newmark at Integrated Community Services (415) 455-8481 or Kara Nassardi/Travis Howard at Manpower (415) 499-9023.

We hope that residents enjoy the fine photographs that we will have on display." The photos have been on display through December and will continue at the following branches and dates: Greenbrae, through Jan. 15; Corte Madera, Jan. 18-29; Mill Valley, Feb. 1-12; and Tiburon, Feb. 15-26.

Maria Elena and Micaela Sanchez, two sisters, defied the recession in mid December when they opened Fifth Avenue Spa in downtown San Rafael. In addition to providing facials, massages and Spa logoother services to pamper and promote well-being, they want to change the perception that spas are only for a select few. "When I walk into a spa in Marin, the staff give me this look that I don't belong there," says co-owner Micaela Sanchez. "We decided to open a place where all women feel welcome." The spa is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue, Suite 4. For more information call (415) 578-8545.

Bay Area businesses are lending their support to healthier children and families through their sponsorship of Community Institute for Psychotherapy's Ticket to Ride, a fundraising benefit with a Beatles twist, to be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010.
