Essential for Business:
Attend Forecasting the Future Conference The 2009 Forecasting the Future Conference will provide what local businesses need for their strategic planning: the latest information and analysis of the economic outlook for business in the North Bay. Keynote speakers will be State Senator Mark Leno and David Crane, Special Advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger for Jobs and Economic Growth. Supervisor Hal Brown will present the State of the County. A panel on Business Climate will include Supervisor Charles McGlashan, Robert Eyler, County of Marin Economic Sustainability Coordinator, Brian Crawford, Director of the County Community Development Agency, and Kim Kaselionis, CEO of Circle Bank. Moderator will be Brad Bollinger, Editor in Chief of the North Bay Business Journal.
The conference takes place Thursday, October 29 from 8 to 11 a.m. with registration at 7:30 a.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel. Honor San Rafael Teachers at Wells Fargo Mixer
The Chamber's October mixer is our annual opportunity for business to welcome new teachers and to thank teachers and school staff for all that they do in educating the next generation. The October Mixer/New Teacher Welcome will take place Wednesday, October 14 at Wells Fargo Bank, 1203 Fourth Street, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wells Fargo, which first opened a bank in San Rafael in 1860, offers numerous services for its business clients.
All Chamber members are invited to attend and meet San Rafael's new teachers while expanded their business network by meeting other members. Nonmembers who wish to attend the mixer are requested to RSVP by calling Jean Kramers at (415)454-4163.
Increase your business contacts with 5 Minute Networking
The Chamber will give businesses an opportunity to increase their business contacts at a 5 Minute Networking® Event in  October. Participants will have the opportunity to meet up to 20 individuals, one-on-one, in five-minute increments. Five minutes gives you time to describe your respective businesses, exchange business cards, and pass on referrals. When you hear the crystal bell ring, it's time to move to another table and meet someone new.
According to Jeffrey Allen, president of Minto and Wilkie Insurance Agency, "I really enjoyed the 5 Minute Networking Event. It was exhausting but very productive. The $25 fee charged was very worth it. Please do another one. What a great way to make a shy person 'work the room'." The Chamber's 5 Minute Networking will take place Tuesday, October 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, 1010 Northgate Drive in San Rafael. "Be Green, $ave Green" is the topic at the Women for Success Lunch on Wednesday, October 28 at the Embassy Suites Hotel. Bob Brown, Community Development Director for the City of San Rafael, and Jamie Tuckey from the Marin County Green Business Program will explain why it makes economic sense to become a Certified Green Business.

Action Plan Workshop Provides Marketing Ideas
A November Good Day, San Rafael program will feature Erik Bunaes of Endorphin Advisors, speaking on the topic, "Good Players Sometimes Play Hurt." He will explain how to take stock of the current situation and put together a marketing action plan for your business for the next six months.

Learn Breast Cancer Updates at Free Forum The public is invited to attend a free educational forum on breast cancer in Marin County on Thursday, October 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center. The event will be focused on how local researchers and clinicians, breast cancer advocates and the public health community are working together to investigate breast cancer prevalence in Marin County. Speakers will discuss the power of community partnerships, updates from the Marin Women's Study breast cancer research, and survivorship strategies. Zero Breast Cancer and the Marin Cancer Institute of Marin General Hospital are among the presenters of this event. Advance registration is required. Redwood Credit Union Celebrates International Credit Union Week with Youth Financial Seminars Redwood Credit Union (RCU) will celebrate International Credit Union Week, October 12 through 17, with free educational seminars, a coloring contest for children, a $100 Member raffle, giveaways and more. Scheduled seminars include Budget-Wise Teens (ages 13-18), Tuesday, October 13: Fundamentals of budgeting, saving and successful money management for teens; and Money & Me (ages 6-12, parents welcome!), Thursday, October 15: An introduction to saving and money management for younger kids, including guidelines to help parents teach children to save. How Business Can Make a Difference for San Rafael
San Rafael businesses will be making an impact on the nationwide Make a Difference Day, October 24, when they join together to clean up and beautify San Rafael by picking up litter, cleaning sidewalks, pulling weeds, cleaning graffiti and otherwise sprucing up their properties and adjacent public lands. San Rafael Clean will acknowledge participating businesses by listing them on their website and will give each participant a poster to display. 10/15 at 10:15 -- The Great California ShakeOutThe City of San Rafael is taking part in the Great California Shakeout, and all residents and businesses are encouraged to participate. Practice how to protect yourself during an earthquake, and get prepared at work, school, and home. At 10:15 a.m. on October 15 millions of Californians will participate in the largest earthquake drill ever. Visit www.shakeout.org to register for the event and become a part of the team that is disaster ready.
As part of the adventure of participating in this drill San Rafael will host Get Ready household disaster preparedness classes a week after the ShakeOut on Thursday, October 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. The training will be at the B Street Community Center, 618 B Street. RSVP at (415)458-5002.
