Proactive Steps to Healthy Trees
I am fortunate to have access to a variety of company and industry resources that enable me to diagnose problems caused by new insects or diseases that appear without any fanfare.
This was the case this past season when I received several calls regarding severe browning on Arborvitae (Thuja), commonly used as a hedgerow. The unexplained early browning on healthy plants has been attributed to two fungi known as Kabatina and Phomopsis, also associated with the decline of large stands of Mt. Laurel (our state flower).
I recommend pruning and removal of infected branches, avoiding overhead irrigation and excessive crowding. Apply fungicide sprays at regular intervals in the spring. Severely infected trees should be removed. If you believe you are having this problem, we can deliver a sample to the Agricultural Station for analysis and discuss remedies for next year. |

Fall Planting is Best for Large Trees
When selecting a tree for planting this fall, consider a species that will develop into a large tree.
Large trees enhance our environment by significantly reducing the amount of pollutants in the air compared to smaller trees.
Large trees increase property values due to their aesthetic appeal and because they save energy by helping to shade our homes in the summer and reduce winter heating costs when used as a windbreak.
Plant potentially large trees in areas that won't restrict their growth and away from problem areas such as beneath service wires.

Concerned About Your Evergreens?
Many of our customers are concerned about the browning/dropping of needles from their ornamental evergreen trees every year during early September through November.
All evergreens go through a natural process of shedding older needles. Hemlock, Arborvitae and White Pine commonly go through this process.
Don't confuse "natural needle drop" with plant stress. You can easily distinguish the difference. Healthy trees have green needles at the tips of the branches. Brown needles are located internally within the tree's canopy. |

Diesel and Gasoline Price Reductions Allow Total Tree Care to Lower its Rates
I am pleased to announce that significantly lower diesel and gasoline costs have allowed us to reduce our rates for most tree services. During the past 10 weeks we have benefited from a significant drop in our fuel costs and we want to pass the savings on to you. I can't remember the last time we were able to do this. I think Jimmy Carter was in the White House.
If you are considering having a tree service performed, there couldn't be a better time. If your work qualifies for our winter work program, then the savings can be even greater.
