Hose
Watering Will Be Especially Beneficial to Trees and Shrubs Prior to Winter

Fall 2007 was moderately dry, so hydrate your shrubs and trees this month to offset the adverse affects that caused many plants and shrubs to die or to be injured this past spring due to the warm and dry January followed by a cold and dry February.

Root damage due to a combination of cold drying winds and low soil moisture content produces brown withered leaves on evergreens and an abnormal amount of new deadwood on deciduous trees.

Vulnerable and valuable plants should be sprayed with an anti-desiccant that coats leaves with a light wax, retarding transpiration [evaporation of water].

Before draining and storing your garden hose, empty it into a 5-gallon bucket and water the base of a tree.

Well, that's all for now as I'm heading out to place deer netting over my azaleas and give them a shot of Deer Stopper. A gardener's work is never done.  Happy holidays!

Watch out for Ice

Are you stocked up on the right kind of de-icing agents for your driveway and walkways? Most de-icing products contain toxic ingredients like glycol or corrosive salts. Many people don't realize that there are newer more environmentally friendly de-icing agents than things like calcium chloride.

If you use heavy salts to melt your walkways, you are negatively impacting many of the trees and shrubs in the vicinity. For an alternative non-toxic bio-ice melting agent go to http://www.orisonmarketing.com/deicers/IceClear/IceClear.html for more information. It's environmentally and user friendly.

Protect People and Property This Winter

The weight of ice and snow in combination with windy days can dislodge dead, diseased, or weak limbs resulting in hazardous conditions.

In general, limbs more than 2-inches in diameter will severely damage roofs, cars and other valuable property.

Ice and snow load can also adversely affect evergreens, especially multi-leader arborvitae, white pines, and hemlock.

This is a good time of year to have your trees inspected and pruned if necessary to prevent damage before it occurs.

Birch Tree
Mind Your Birch Trees

Have you ever seen a birch tree bent or bowed because of snow or ice load?

When birches occur as understory trees in the forest, they are naturally protected from snow load. As residents of your landscape, they do not benefit from this natural protection and are susceptible to snow/ice load damage.

Birch trees more than 10 years old and never properly pruned will benefit tremendously from proper pruning and shaping, especially going into the winter.

I hope you find this information useful as you care for your trees. Tell me about specific areas of interest that you'd like us to discuss in a future report.
Sincerely,
