Total Tree Care Tips of the Month
August, 2007
Greetings!

This is the first edition of Total Tree Care's Arborist Tips of the Month. Total Tree Care arborists are delighted to have this opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with you.

You will be receiving seasonal and topical information every month.

Geoff Geoff Harris - Tip of The Month
New Lace BugStarting mid-June, check the underside of leaves for a lacewing black headed bug called the Lace Bug. This bug sucks the chlorophyll from the leaves resulting in a mottled look. This insect can be easily controlled by applying Bifenthrin to the underside of the leaf. This pest is most commonly found on Andromedas but also affects most types of Azaleas.
Kennedy Mike Kennedy - Tip of the Month Flowers Around Tree
Cultivating and planting around the base of established trees is not a recommended practice and could be detrimental!  Please do not confuse this with properly mulching around trees and shrubs. A 2" to 4" layer of wood mulch applied around trees and shrubs is often the single best thing that you can do to improve the condition of their root zones.
Paul Paul Bowery - Tip of the Month
Tree WateringWater your trees heavily by an additional 1 - 2 inches of water per week during hot dry periods in July to early September. Trees prefer a heavy deep soaking less frequently than lawn irrigation.  Keep in mind that too much water can be just as bad as not enough. That is why watering once per week works best for trees.
I hope you find this information useful as you care for your trees. I would be interested in hearing from you about specific areas of interest that you'd like us to discuss in a future report.
Sincerely,

Mike Toth
