ACHIEVA Sponsors Disability Awareness Night Resouce Fair at PNC Park |
Information from Reid Wolfe, President of ACHIEVA Support
The Pittsburgh Pirates recently hosted Disability Awareness Night, on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at PNC Park, to honor and acknowledge those individuals and families affected by disabilities. ACHIEVA was a sponsor at the resource fair that was held prior to the game at PNC Park.
ACHIEVA volunteer staff: Shayne Roos, Customized Day Program Manager; Jennifer Kropp, Community Homes Specialist; Rose Warman, Director of Home Care and Laurie Bungard, Family Trust Assistant Coordinator volunteered at the ACHIEVA table to distribute brochures and service material to the general public.
Before the first pitch, John Aldisert, a Pittsburgh Pirates enthusiastic fan and son of Helen, trustee and long-time supporter of ACHIEVA, along with Shayne Roos, were invited onto the field and recognized for their help on behalf of ACHIEVA.
Our Pirates scheduled an awesome display of fireworks after a 5-4 win over the Houston Astros.

Kudos to ACHIEVA Employees on the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community |
Information From Cathy Downs, Development Associate
A thank you to ACHIEVA's weather committee for predicting great walking conditions for the recent Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community at PNC Park. ACHIEVA had 110 registered walkers and raised over $9,500 for the services and supports provided by ACHIEVA.
This year we had several organized groups:
- "Downs the Hatch", captained by Cathy Downs with a winning donation collection of $1,050 from family and friends;
- "The Achievers", led by Captain Angie Tomer, Assistant Manager, Mail Service
The following departments raised over $3,600:
- Arc of Beaver $22
- Corporate Development $571
- Early Intervention $733
- Family Trust $330
- Home Care $426
- Human Resources $244
- Residential $447
- Vocational $876
Special thanks to our employees for supporting the various fundraisers. All funds raised through the walk benefitted ACHIEVA. |

Good News on Health Benefits
It has been a long, cold wet spring and management employees have been working hard to get the best deal possible for employee medical, dental and vision coverage for the upcoming budget year beginning July 1. Again, ACHIEVA requested rate proposals and plan designs from major regional carriers and reviewed them in detail. Initial renewal rates for our current plans would have increased health costs shared by ACHIEVA and employees by over $550,000!
Naturally, we were disappointed with the large increase, especially when expected revenues for the upcoming budget year remain uncertain. Extensive discussions with carriers finally resulted in additional proposals that contained alternative funding arrangements with lower costs.
ACHIEVA is pleased to announce that it will continue to offer a medical plan for eligible employees that is very similar to our existing Base Plan, with NO INCREASES in payroll contributions or deductions. The fact that ACHIEVA is still in a position to make such substantial contributions to medical care costs is more and more unusual in today's difficult health care environment.
There is more good news: existing dental and vision plans are continuing as is, with no increases to payroll contributions or changes to the plan design. Additionally, under our medical, dental and vision plans, coverage will now be available for dependents up to their 26th birthday, regardless of student status.
There are some very important changes for you to be aware of, so please review the information below.
Our new carrier for medical insurance will be Health America. Health America has continued to expand its hospital and physician network. Employees will generally find a comprehensive list of doctors and hospitals that will suit their medical needs.
There will now be only one medical plan offered to employees, modeled after the current Base Plan. For most employees, previously combined payroll contributions and other out-of-pocket expenses for the Buy-up Plan may have resulted in more expense to them. Offering only one plan also decreases the overall administrative expenses associated with providing multiple plans.
Under the new medical plan there is an alternative funding arrangement, known as a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA). A plan-wide $2,500 deductible must be satisfied; however, this deductible is shared by both ACHIEVA and employees. The employee's deductible is $500 for single coverage and $1,000 for family coverage. ACHIEVA then funds the difference between the employee's deductible and the plan-wide $2,500 deductible. Health America is responsible for any eligible expenses over the plan-wide $2,500 deductible. The effect of this arrangement is seamless to employees when receiving medical care, but will be seen when employees see their Explanation of Benefits from Health America.
Another difference is that a $300 inpatient hospital co-pay will be charged when the employee or covered dependent is admitted to the hospital. However, ACHIEVA will reimburse employees for this payment when proper documentation is submitted by the employee. This will be considered taxable income; therefore, taxes must be withheld from this payment.
Stay tuned for new wellness initiatives that ACHIEVA will be providing this year, with financial assistance from Health America. It is well known that taking care of ourselves can reduce health care costs. Employees who want help with smoking cessation, weight management or other wellness efforts will find a wealth of opportunities to choose from.
The Open Enrollment Period for medical, dental, and vision plans is now underway with an effective date of July 1. You must complete and submit the enrollment form for medical coverage to the Human Resources Department by June 10th. You can also switch dental plans or add or remove dependents for your medical, dental and vision plans. You will not be able to do this throughout the year unless you experience a Qualified Change in Family Status, as defined by government regulations.
If you are currently enrolled in a dental or vision plan and wish to continue, you will need to complete and submit a new enrollment form to the appropriate Human Resources Department by June 10th only if you switch plans, add or remove dependents.
If you have questions, please contact Sharon Berardelli at 412-995-5000 ext. 450 for ACHIEVA or Janet Laurella at 724-837-8159 ext. 109 for The Arc Westmoreland.

Cleanup and Disposal of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL's) |
The most important steps to reduce exposure to mercury vapor from a broken bulb are:
Before cleanup
- People and pets should leave the room
- Shut off the central air heating or air conditioning (HVAC) system
- Air out the room for 5 - 10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment
- Collect materials needed to clean up the broken bulb
During cleanup
- Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder
- Place cleanup materials in a sealable container
After cleanup
- Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of properly
- Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors
- For several hours, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the HVAC system shut off

Use Caution as Bin-Laden Photos Can Bring Malware to Your Computer! |
From Steve McDonell, Information Systems Director
With the biggest news in a decade dominating the Internet, it didn't take long for rogue viruses, Trojans and other malware to mess with computers given the chance.
Web searches and links to a variety of stories - real and fake - about the death of Osama Bin- Laden are sprouting with all kinds of malicious software as cybercriminals look for a big payday tied to the news about the Al-Qaida leader's demise.
