February 2, 2011

This week as we watch events unfold in Egypt, with millions of citizens peacefully taking to the streets to demand with one voice the justice they have so long been denied, we are renewed in hope: reminded of the real power which resides in the hands of ordinary individuals when they come together to speak the truth and relentlessly insist upon change.

Yet, it is not sufficient that we applaud their struggle for freedom from afar. We must heed the rally cry of our Egyptian sisters and brothers and meet the call to action which exists in our own lives. We must recognize that it is the support of our own government, motivated by self interest, which has too long allowed the authoritarian Mubarak regime to repress its citizens and deny the people of Egypt their fundamental rights to freedom of speech, economic security and the self-determination.

We, the individuals who make up this nation, carry a debt and obligation to speak out on behalf of our fellow children of God residing in Egypt as we have unjustly reaped political and economic benefits at the expense of their poverty and oppression.

Currently U.S. security and military aid to Egypt stands at around $1.3 billion annually, making it the second  largest recipient of U.S. military and economic aid after Israel. This aid is devoted primarily to strengthening the regimes domestic security and its ability to crush descent and provides the United States with benefits far exceeding the value of what Egypt has received.  As we have witnessed in recent days Egyptians are fed up with the repressive and corrupt U.S.-backed regime and will no longer tolerate to suffer in silence.

Historically, U.S. support for authoritarian regimes has not ended until we, its citizens, demand it. It is high time then, that we, out of solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Christ, call on our government to end its support for Mubarak and grant freedom to the people of Egypt.

Let us be a strong and unwavering voice for change as we together: Pray for the realization of our dream of a new earth, Study our nation's support of a corrupt regime, and Act to demand freedom for the people of Egypt and all who suffer under oppression.

In Peace,

PRAY: We Believe

By Dom Helder Camara

I will not believe in the law of the strongest,

In the language of guns,

In the power of the powerful.

I want to believe in the right of all,

In the open hand,

In the strength of the non-violent.

I will not believe in race or riches.

In privileges,

In the established order.

I want to believe that all human beings

Are human beings

And that the order of force and of injustice

Is a disorder.

I will not believe that I don't have to concern myself

With what happens far from here.

I want to believe that the whole world

Is my home, the field that I sow,

And that all reap what all have sown.

I will not believe that I can combat oppression out there

If I tolerate injustice here.

I want to believe that what is right

Is the same here and there

And that I will not be free

While even one human being is excluded.

I will not believe that war and hunger are inevitable

And that peace is inaccessible.

I want to believe in the love of bare hands,

In peace on earth.

I will not believe that any effort is in vain.

I will not believe that the dream of human beings

Continues being only a dream

And that death is the end.

But I dare to believe in the dream of God:

A new heaven, a new earth

Where justice reigns.

STUDY: U.S. continues to back Egyptian dictatorship in the face of pro-democracy uprising

By Stephen Zunes in Truthout

Washington's continued support for the Egyptian dictatorship in the face of massive pro-democracy protests is yet another sign that both Congress and the Obama administration remain out of touch with the growing demands for freedom in the Arab world. Just last month, Obama and the then-Democratic-controlled Congress approved an additional $1.3 billion in security assistance to help prop up Hosni Mubarak's repressive regime.

In the course of some pro-democracy civil insurrections, such as those in Iran and Burma, Washington has strongly condemned the regime and provided strong words of encouragement for the pro-democracy activists challenging their repression. In a couple of cases, such as Serbia and Ukraine, the United States and other Western countries even provided limited amounts of economic assistance to pro-democracy groups. Most of the time, however, and particularly if the dictatorship is a US ally like Egypt, Washington has shown little enthusiasm for such freedom struggles.

The United States has defended its support of the Mubarak dictatorship as part of the war on terror, seeing the Egyptian regime as a bulwark against Islamic extremism; however, the main organizers of the massive street protests are the 6 April youth movement, which is not only alienated from the secular Mubarak regime, but from the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists, as well. The Brotherhood refused to back up the protesters through the morning of January 25, (though it later opportunistically endorsed them as it witnessed hundreds of thousands of ordinary Egyptians joining the protesters' ranks). The demonstrators being beaten, shot and tear-gassed by U.S.-supplied equipment want freedom and justice, not theocracy.

ACT: Stop funding the Mubarak regime; petition for a free Egypt

Email, call, fax, or write U.S. decision-makers: Stop funding the Mubarak regime now!

The U.S. government must break its ties to the current regime in Egypt. As courageous Egyptian citizens are being bombarded with U.S. tear gas and other Made-in-the-USA weapons. The U.S. gives $1.3 billion a year of our tax dollars to Hosni Mubarak.  Since 1948, the U.S. has given Egypt $68 billion in aid.  Since 1979, Egypt has been the second-biggest recipient of U.S. aid after Israel.

Call on President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and the U.S. Congress to:

  • Stand with our Egyptian sisters and brothers by committing to stop funding the oppressive regime of Mubarak
  • With Reps. Keith Ellison (D-MN), Jim McDermott (D-WA), and Jim McGovern (D-MA), call on the Government of Egypt to stop using violence against its own people; allow the free flow of information over the Internet, phone networks and in the media; and engage immediately with the Egyptian people on reforms.

In a chilling move that could set a dangerous global precedent, Egypt's government has responded to pro-democracy protests by shutting down access to the Internet. They hope to make it impossible for protesters to coordinate, and to hide the government's brutal crackdown from the eyes of the world.

Raise your voice for universal freedom of speech and freedom of information by signing a petition calling on President Obama to withhold any more aid to Egypt unless their government reopens the channels of communication, including the Internet, and honors the Egyptian people's demands for true democracy.
