Second Week of Advent, December 5-11, 2010
|
Greetings!
Thanks for the kind response to this past weekend's first in a our weekly series of emails with resources for prayer, study and action for Advent 2010. Starting this week, we'll send out each of these a few days before the week in Advent for which they are designed, giving you a chance to use them with your groups or churches, or share them with friends. May the God of peace bless you this season!
In peace, Johnny Zokovitch Program Director, Pax Christi USA

PRAY: Dec. 5, Second Sunday of Advent
| | Isaiah 11:1-10 | Romans 15:4-9 | Matthew 3:1-12
"There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain, for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of God" (Isaiah 11:9).
Today's reading from Isaiah is one of my favorites; it gives us the promise of the peaceable kingdom, with the lamb lying next to the lion, and the wolf and the leopard, everyone relieved of fright since "the earth was filled with the knowledge of God." In other words, ignorance breeds fear. But opening our minds and hearts to the "other," dismantling that ignorance that stifles love, will give us the security God promises. It is our responsibility to do this, even when the effort to remain open to God's work in all things is sometimes challenging...

STUDY: Touching the wounds
| | From the Mercy Delegation in El Salvador, Day 1 (Nov. 30th), submitted by Jean Stokan
We started our first full day in El Salvador going to the chapel where Archbishop Romero was assassinated. On a wall leading up to the chapel is a powerful mural of Romero surrounded by his beloved people. Some are depicted as under weights of oppression, others are smiling. Romero is holding a child with one hand and the other hand is raised--with a striking blood-red stigmata in the center. His feet as well are imaged with the stigmata.
Your eyes are then drawn to the people all holding up their hands, each bearing the stigmata, their feet as well. We stood across the street to get a full view and gazed a long time in silence. Quietly, Claudia Ward, RSM from St. Louis, broke from the group to go and touch the stigmata. One by one we followed...

ACT: Sharing the stories of Afghan youth, U.S. veterans
| |
As we await the birth of the Christ child, we ask:
Whose Children Are These?
The Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers and American Veterans Share Their Stories
Sundays, November 28, December 5, 12 and 19
Listen to Afghan youth and U.S. veterans share experiences of war each Sunday during Advent from 1-2pm EST. Participants will be connected by conference call as Afghan youth from the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers talk with U.S. veterans from Iraq Veterans Against the War.
This unique opportunity is hosted by Dispersed Communities Uniting--a program of the Hosanna People's Seminary--that allows people divided by distance but united by purpose to connect using new media technologies, and co-sponsored by Christian Peace Witness!
Participants can join in this experience by listening to a series of free conference calls (U.S. long-distance charges may apply) in which the Afghan youth and U.S. vets will talk. Voices of Afghan children and veterans will be privileged in these calls, but there will be opportunities for others to ask questions and make comments.
Conference call participants may dial into 1-218-936-4141 (pin number 4790204). Please click here to go to www.hosannapeoplesseminary.org/advent2010.html to register and for details of each call.
