Yeaa!  Woohoo!  (Dancing around with hands in the air! with happy music playing loudly!)  It is FREE week at The Yoga Center of Columbia! This is always a fun week for me because I so look forward to introducing new people to yoga and getting my continuing students back to the basics.  There is excitement during free week as the energy is high with the start of a new session, people returning from their summer schedule, and a recommitment to our health!  It is a joyful week full of expecta-tions.  Please come a join me this week for some:  spiritedness, stretching, strengthening, and savasana!

Mantra
A mantra is a sound or phrase that aids in the concentration of meditation.  It is a Sanskrit term and literally means 'instrument of thought'.  Here you will find a suggested mantra to use during the week.  Just repeat it whenever you need a lift.

I am supported by life!

Rib-Tickler of the Week - hee hee
A tough old Badlands rancher once told his grandson that the secret to a long life was to sprinkle a little gunpowder on his oatmeal every morning.  The grandson did this religiously and he lived to be 93!  When he died he left 14 children, 28 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren...and a 15-foot hole in the wall of the crematorium!
Constructive Rest Pose
Constructive Rest Pose
Constructive Rest Pose
Constructive Rest Pose (CRP) is one of the five poses that I recommend that everyone do everyday!  (It is on the poster that you see to your left.)  You must be able to get down on the floor to do it because lying on a hard surface is what makes this pose so healing.  If you can't lie on the floor perhaps lie on a table instead.

I start all of my classes in this way, no matter what level they are.  The reason is to relax.  As a society we frown on relaxing, we don't allow ourselves to rest during our normal daily activities.  When students arrive to class their bodies and breath are uptight so it doesn't make sense to start doing yoga in this way.  We need to first relax the spine (which is what yoga is all about ~ the spine).

The spine houses the nervous system if we don't allow it to release and lengthen everyday then this leads to anxiety, fatigue, compression, and disc problems.  I was first introduced to this pose by Liz Koch whose Applications Course I took when learning about the psoas muscle on my journey to healing my SI joint pain.  Liz Koch

For many years this pose was the only pose I did in my own personal practice even though I was teaching yoga. Now I am pain free!  I credit CRP and Yoga Nidra (more about this in another newsletter) for my healing.  This is what I wish for all of my students ~ to move with freedom in all of their joints.

Join me by lying on the floor now as I talk you through a Constructive Rest Pose by clicking on the picture above.
Nutrition Prescription - Coconuts
Coconuts
Coconuts are now listed as one of the super foods that everyone must add to their diets.  It comes in many ways including:  oil, milk/cream/butter, water, and food.  We are talking about virgin coconut oil not the hydrogenated ones that have trans-fats, be sure to check the label.

Coconut oil is rich in saturated fats which gave it a bad rap in the past and induced the FDA to warn against eating it if you had heart disease, instead it is one of the healthiest oils around.  This is because coconut oil is a medium-chain-fatty-acid (lauric acid) which is broken down quickly by the liver and is burned as fuel by the body rather than being stored as 'fat'.  Because it goes directly to the liver no bile or pancreatic enzymes are needed to break it down which makes it great for diabetics or those with gall bladder problems or pancreatic cancer.  In fact lauric acid in coconut is the same as that produced in a mother's milk!  (Note:  It's the long-chain-fatty-acids the FDA is talking about that can be harmful to your health.  These are in beef, butter, and  hydrogenated vegetable oils like canola.)  Lauric Acid -WebMD

In the Pacific War (1941-1945) both sides used coconut water, siphoned directly from the coconut, as a plasma substitute for emergency care of wounded soldiers.  It is very popular now to drink coconut water instead of Gatorade because it hydrates while replacing electrolytes without the added sugar.

This tropical fruit's water has anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties so guzzle some down if you begin to feel sick this winter!  It also has natural iodine properties which aids in preventing goiter (enlarged thyroid gland).  It is being used as a bio-fuel in Tokelau, a string of islands near New Zealand, as a part of their becoming the first country in the world to completely convert to sustainable energy sources as their energy system.  Tokelau Energy

It is used for a multitude of health benefits as well as in cooking, skin care, shampoos, fuel, the list goes on and on.  Add it to your diet today and begin to enjoy it's sweet rewards.
Ponderings - Earthing
There is a new term that you will see being thrown about on the internet nowadays, it is 'Earthing'.  It means to come in contact with the earth by lying, sitting, or walking on it.  The Earth has negative electrons, we build up positive electrons in our bodies (ever hear of free radicals? - same thing) due to our chosen lifestyles.  This is one time when a positive is really a negative.  Earthing is when we exchange electrons with the earth by absorbing its negative electrons and discharging our positive ones.

A main culprit to creating positive electrons is the wireless systems with which we are surrounding ourselves due to the electromagnetic waves (wifi, cellphones, soon more radiation from BGE's smart meters Smart Meters).  Wearing shoes with rubber soles, living/working more in buildings, buying our foods from supermarkets all lead to the build up of these positive electrons.  This leads to inflammation, insomnia, muscle/joint pain, hormonal imbalances, snoring, and a host of other ills.

Basically our bodies are meant to come into contact with the Earth!  But think about it, when was the last time you actually lied on, sat, or walked on the ground?  I'm not talking about walking on concrete, blacktop, or a wooden deck - I'm talking about dirt, earth, grass, rocks, or sand.

When we walk on the earth we discharge these positive electrons and bring our bodies into harmony with the same electrical energy as the earth.  Just as we must ground the outlets in our homes, we need to be 'grounded' by the earth to live optimally.

As a species we used to be in much more contact with the earth from walking barefoot, or in shoes made from animal skins, to tilling the gardening and tending to livestock.  So get outside while you still can and walk barefoot (be careful of hazards such as poop, bees, stick and stones).  Spread a blanket on the ground if the grass bothers you and relax back in Constructive Rest Pose (see above) while watching the clouds in the sky.  Stay here for at least 30 minutes.  You'll also absorb some Vitamin D from the sun too!

The very best place to balance your body is at the beach since both the sand and the salt water help to balance us. That is why just about everyone finds being on a beach vacation so relaxing, plus the ocean is full of good magnesium which relaxes the muscles - another bonus!

If you aren't able to touch Mother Earth then check out the link below to purchase a Earthing Mat which grounds you while you are inside.

Here is a thermal image of a woman who complained of inflammation and chronic pain. The second image shows a significant improvement after she Earthed for 30 minutes.

What more proof do you need?  So kick off your shoes! There are so many things you can do:
Grab the family for a barefooted outdoors picnic!
Take a hike sans rubber-soled shoes!
Dance barefoot in your backyard!  (maybe your neighbors will join you)
Perhaps take part in an environmental clean up - while you are helping our Mother Earth, she will be helping you too!
Dig into the earth and plant some bulbs for the springtime!
Or purchase an Earthing mat for the winter.

Whatever you choose to do to ground yourself, begin now.  Get outside, enjoy this beautiful Fall weather, and feel the stress melt away as you become more healthy and balanced.

HeartMD Institute - Dr. Sinatra talks about grounding benefits.
Earthing - website and products that help ground you indoors (for those who can't get outdoors or live in cold climates).  Dr. Oz and Dr. Mercola use Earthing mats.
I hope I get to see you this coming week in one of my free classes!  It's a carefree week as we get back to basics.  Come every day if you can, it's FREE!   No worries, you can do yoga everyday!  Try something new like Qigong or Pilates to stimulate your mental processes too.  Come on out and have fun as you get healthy.
Namaste,
Debbie
